Re: How to make sharing an office suck less
At my firm, the experiences I've heard have run the gamut. I've heard of office mates who literally don't say a word to each other and I know of people who have banged out their office mates as well... really depends on the situation. As for me, I've just been nice to mine and we go out for drinks now and then and talk during the day but I don't consider him/her my best friend.

If you like the person, it's better in my opinion. Days are less boring, and it's useful to get a second perspective on stuff.

Insane to me that people put up with those conditions. Sharing an office = may as well be a cube monkey.

What are you talking about? This is extremely common in many American workspaces.Regulus wrote:lol it still amazes me how little tolerance Americans have for having an office mate, especially as a junior. Apparently many people here have never worked in an office setting where you are surrounded by other people (as in not even having cubicle walls). I cannot imagine what such people would do if you ever had to work in a setting where they could hear / see more than just one other person. But I guess that's just the 'Murican way.

Well, when almost everyone else at their place of employment does have an entire room to themselves, sure, those who don't get a little peeved.Regulus wrote:It is less common in America than many other countries, but yes, it does exist here. However, my point wasn't supposed to be about the layout of our offices as much as it was meant to be about the fact that many Americans feel like they're entitled to have an entire room to themselves at work and are upset when that isn't the case.dixiecupdrinking wrote:What are you talking about? Come to LA! We all get nice, big, bright offices with spectacular window views (unless you're at PH).A. Yeah, it's the same principle as complaining about bonuses or below-market salaries. Sure, it sounds whiny and entitled when someone gets pissed about getting 5k less than market when they're already making 160+, but when your peers are making more and have windowed offices while still doing the same work as you, it seems like a reasonable thing to bitch about.A.
