Offer from top-flight DC firm in less than 48 hours after callback. Firms are moving quick

Targeting NY, DC and a few smaller NE markets.

# of OGI Interviews: 22
# of OGI CBs (so far): 1
# of OGI Dings: 4
# outstanding: 17

Most of the rejections were expected: they didn't preselect me, they're V20. But I got dinged by a V75 that preselected me and CB'ed by a V20. So IDK what to make of the situation. I've got the impression that I'm on a lot of peoples' "second choice" lists.

Which, btw, a dude at a BigLaw firm in NY told me are a real thing. They tend to play the numbers -- 70% or whatever accept callbacks, 50% get offers, 40% accept offers. But a few years ago when the economy was bad, vastly more than the expected percentage took the CBs and offers, so a lot of them CB/offer in waves. So the fact that 10CBs have gone out doesn't mean you're out of the running. It just means they didn't like you the best.

This may be true and while you can get callbacks in NY if you haven't heard anything for a while, the odds aren't great. It's not impossible, but I'm guessing around 90% of callbacks for NY firms come within 2 days of the screener. When I did it, if I hadn't heard in that timeframe, I got nothing. It was similar for more of my friends, with the stray callback here or there.

Basically, if you're at a position now where you are waiting on NY callbacks and don't have much, you need to start hustling - and quickly. While you might hear back from a place or two, this is a bad time to be sitting around and waiting. Trying to get a job in October is immensely harder than August.

Curious about the following: Drinker Biddle, Alston & Bird, Fried Frank (NY), Latham (NY) (expecting the worst, but haven't heard anything yet one way or the other)

Latham NY did CBs last week and does snail mail dings (but you could just be on hold!). Also interviewed w/ Fried Frank NY and haven't heard a peep.

Yes, at least some Skadden NY CBs went out a week ago (believe it was the day they interviewed).

So, I only have a couple CBs lined up, although I still haven't heard back from about 15 firms.

The answer around here seems to be "hustle." Is that just the UVA lingo for massmailing? Or is there something more I should be doing? CS told us that two weeks was about the right time to start follwing up with offices where we may be getting held.

How does one know if one is on hold? What if the firm just doesn't get back to people who do not receive callbacks?

I think you could tell if they haven't dinged you yet, but they have given out CBs. That's what I'm assuming, at any rate.

Or maybe they're just slower on the ding if they do them in alphabetical order or something. Really there's no way to tell. The office could also be interviewing at other schools or something and want to see what they can get out of their CBs there.

The odds of them calling you back in a month are really low. Even when firms underyielded, they normally dip back into mass mails, and give those people straight CB's. I think there's an awkwardness, because they know you know you weren't first choice. I think they really want to make their future associates feel like they love them even if they only like them.

Or the firm just never actually gets around to dinging you. I had a number of screeners that I just never heard back from at all.

The fact that several firms I've mass mailed to since my screeners have already sent me first-class snail mail dings, but none of my screeners have gotten in touch with me, is the most nervewracking thing in the world.

Wonder how I'm doing.
Funny, pretty similar stats here -- pretty far below median, fairly good interviewer, targeting Atlanta/secondary markets

# OGI Interviews: 22
# OGI CBs: 4

Kilpatrick Townsend CB (atlanta). --> For people wondering what's going on if some people have gotten CBs from a particular firm but you yourself have heard nothing: I know of three KT CBs that went out early last week, mine came in 2 nights ago. Waves do happen.
