Sidley Austin LLP Interview

Post by Connor Benz » Sat Aug 09, 2014 2:19 pm

I was wondering, for those who have interviewed with Sidley, what was the interview like and what are the types of questions they have a proclivity to ask.

Thanks!

Sidley Chicago was two interviewers and was more on the formal side. A couple of resume questions, a couple of behavioral questions, then asked if I had anything I wanted to know about the firm.

This is probably going to vary a lot among offices and individual interviewers. I haven't heard anything about Sidley to indicate that they have a firm-wide approach to interviewing that is materially different from any other firm.

Sidley NY is pretty laid back. They seem to want nice, normal people. Like most NY offices atm, they are looking for Corporate bodies.

That's it? How do they pick somebody from asking like, three questions?

Pro-tip : Legal recruiting, especially the OCI process, is an incredibly inexact science. They only interview people who are qualified enough for the job, but after that it's borderline random chance that determines who gets an offer.

I have the option of having lunch with associates during a CB. it would extend the CB 1 hour to 3.5 hours. Should I?

Probably because they only had 9 summers last year. I'd email alums at the firm and schedule calls/coffee to ask these questions

People seemed pretty nice. Office seemed to lean more towards lit than corporate but they're full service. Probably wouldn't hurt to express an interest in a few areas, especially if you'd otherwise be a die-hard corporate bro like me.

Sidley NY was one of the most laid-back, casual, and frank screeners I've had to date. Both partners were nonchalant in talking about their pragmatic reasons for joining the firm in addition to all the usual "the people are great, yadda yadda" BS, which they acknowledged was BS since every firm says the same damn thing.

I take it you've done a CB with them. How long from CB to offer? Also how was the CB?

Callback was standard format, four ~30 minutes interviews (three partners, one associate for me) then lunch with two junior associates. I'd tell you how long it took to get an offer but I only got a snail mail rejection which came probably two weeks later.

Does anyone know how many callbacks they give out after the screening?

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
