BigLaw chances: 3.75 GPA, Top 3% at TTT
Finished my 1L year with a 3.75 and am in the top 3% at a TTT school in Texas. I am wanting to target big firms in Dallas and Houston for 2L summer, but don't have any ties to either city. I'm interested in transactional work, especially real estate development and finance. Spending this summer as a judicial intern for a federal district judge and a law clerk for a firm in my hometown.
What do you guys think about my BigLaw chances? Any suggestions on which firms I should target?
Thanks in advance.

OP here. Transferring isn't really an option due to family reasons.
Any advice on targeting BigLaw firms would be appreciated.

Do big law firms show up at OCI at TTU?

You'd be surprised, I go to a TTTT and we had several students transfer to T25 after 1L.Desert Fox wrote:Can you even transfer somewhere decent with top 3% at a TTT?sparty99 wrote:Transfer. T25 is hardly an assurance of biglaw.girlinlaw8 wrote:You'd be surprised, I go to a TTTT and we had several students transfer to T25 after 1L.Desert Fox wrote:Can you even transfer somewhere decent with top 3% at a TTT?sparty99 wrote:Transfer. OP again. There's several biglaw firms that do OCI at Tech, but obviously not as many as UT, UH, or SMU. My main question is whether I even have a shot at these firms since I don't have any connections to the cities.Desert Fox wrote:Can you even transfer somewhere decent with top 3% at a TTT?sparty99 wrote:Transfer. I don't think ties will matter too much. You are top 3%. You need to find out how many people they interview. You need to consider transferring. At least try. Imagine if you were top 3% at SMU.Anonymous User wrote:OP again. There's several biglaw firms that do OCI at Tech, but obviously not as many as UT, UH, or SMU. Transfer to UT. Transfer students tend to do quite well at OCI. Everyone I know who transferred (4 or 5 people) landed excellent jobs. If you truly want biglaw, you MUST transfer. Move your family with you if you must. Go apply now: http://www.utexas.edu/law/admissions/transfer/Anonymous User wrote:OP again. I don't really buy the "family issues" thing given that you're already planning to target several different cities for your 2L summer job. Transfer, dude. You have a SHOT at biglaw right now, but you'll have easily 4 or 5 times the odds at UT than you do presently. Only 4% of students get into biglaw from your school. Do you know where that puts you as "top 3%?" It puts you firmly in the "maybe" category, and I can assure you that at least a couple of the people scooping up those jobs have connections that you probably lack. Transfer to UT and you'll be able to say you were in the top 3% of your class AND do OCI at a school where 1/3 of the students make biglaw. Most firms will look at your transfer and see that you are ambitious, willing to relocate, and an exceptional student, generally. You are robbing yourself if you do not attempt to transfer. UT is absolutely where the big Texas firms pick up their local talent. Please do the right thing and make the best of the opportunity you have been blessed with.

This is solid advice.
Transfer to UT.
OP - Hate to jump on the bandwagon derailing your focus on big law hiring at your current school but you should listen to the other posters. OCI is insanely humbling. Give yourself a better shot and aim for UT.
