Info on Public Interest/Human Rights Fellowships

Post by worldtraveler » Wed May 14, 2014 11:05 pm

This thread is to crowdsource information on postgrad fellowships for public interest or human rights work. Don't post school specific fellowships unless you can apply from at least a few law schools. Anything open to a 3L or recent grad.

Also requesting that we not discuss Skadden/EJW in this thread because there is tons of info elsewhere on those, and people falsely believe those are the only two PI fellowships.

If you know of a fellowship, post its info here.

Ford Foundation Law School Public Interest Fellowships

(for graduates of Harvard Law School, NYU School of Law, Stanford Law School, and Yale Law School)

For some reason the Ford Foundation only has the info on the fellowships they provide for 1L's and 2L's (that I can find -- http://www.fordfoundation.org/issues/ed ... ellowships), but each of the schools has the post-grad info on their websites. Here's the blurb from H's:

"Post-Graduate Fellowships

The Ford Foundation Post-Graduate Fellowship in Public Interest Law will support law school graduates from Harvard Law School, NYU School of Law, Stanford Law School, and Yale Law School. The fellowship funds one year of full-time work at a Ford Foundation grantee organization beginning in fall 2014. Three fellows will be selected from each of the four law schools, for a total of twelve fellowships.

The fellowship carries a $45,000 stipend. The Ford Foundation will additionally reimburse up to $15,000 of the host organization’s costs for benefits.

Post-Graduate Fellows may join a Ford grantee organization in ordinary staff attorney positions, or work with a Ford grantee organization to develop a feasible one-year project which supports the organization’s mission.

Applicants are responsible for reaching out to the Ford grantee organization where they would like to conduct their fellowship, and securing a Letter of Support by the application deadline."

Considering this is also a repository of links, maybe it would be helpful to have a link to Skadden and EJW? And maybe the thread(s) discussing them so that people know where to go to get info?

Empire Justice in upstate NY just posted a 2 year PI fellowship. They are not obsessed with prestige. If you wanted to do EJW but don't have a sponsor (or even if you do), apply ASAP.

Anyone have an idea as to what a standard stipend would be (particularly interested in teaching or LL.M. programs)? Thank you!
