Why this firm?

Postby lawhopeful10 » Mon Feb 03, 2014 8:16 pm

I was wondering if anyone had good advice on how to respond to a why this firm question in an interview. I am only a 1L so I am guessing they don't expect me to be 100% sure yet but transactional work really interests me so I was going to say my undergrad major was economics and that made me want to do transactional work. Any suggestions on how best to say that? Also if anyone has any extra good questions they would want to ask the firm at the end of an interview that can't be answered from a law firms web side I would appreciate any of those too since trying to come up with some is really annoying haha.

Thanks in advance.

They may not expect you to know much because you're a 1L, but if you can answer this impressively it can really set you apart. The interviewers aren't stupid, they know law students will apply to literally hundreds of firms and essentially want to know whether their firm is just another firm on your list or if you really want to work there. Before your interview, reach out to alumni that work at the firm or other practitioners in that area to learn what working at the firm is like, what work you would be doing, ect. Find something that shows you know more than just what is on the website and that you really think the firm is a good fit for you. Simply saying you want to do transactional work and that they do transactional work doesn't show that you have any interest in their firm over any other firm.

Also, questions about the interviewer are always great questions, but don't wait until the end of the interview to ask them. If they ask you why you went to law school, answer and then ask why they went. When they ask why you want to work at their firm, answer and then ask why they wanted to work there. And at the end of the interview, ask questions about where the firm is going over the next 5-10 years. This shows you want to be there long term and are invested in their firm.

Easy, just find out their biggest competition and say you compared the two and found them superior. Nothing like some good ole fashion brown nosing and pitting them against competition.
