I interviewed Friday 12/9, and I received a call notifying me of reference checks on Friday 12/16. I didn't get any more info – hope this helps, good luck to everyone!

Did they mention if this was for the January class?

I was only told about a class starting 1/17/17. Is the possibility of a class starting later just speculation (based on hiring practices over the last few years), or was this discussed during anyone's interview? Still waiting to hear back and starting to lose hope :(

Hiring for an additional class was, in fact, a point discussed during my first panel interview. Furthermore, when I was escorted by an interviewer from the reception area to the first panel room, the interviewer was lamenting of having to hire for not just one class, but two, in a more compressed time frame than they usually reserve for the hiring of just one class. It seems like everyone that has received an offer so far has been for the 1/17 date, which seems to suggest that decisions or notifications for the second class have likely not yet been made.

I feel you 110%, I am in the same boat, and I'm sure many other people are as well. The frustrating part about applying with the feds is that there often seems to be no rhyme or reason behind their hiring decisions - even when I talk to people who already work for the USPTO, even they can't seem to figure it out. Many people go through the hiring process multiple times before finally getting an offer.

These are all things I have to keep reminding myself of as well. And keep applying, here and to other agencies and firms. Because it never pays to put all of your eggs in one basket. Because eggs are fragile, yo :)

Anyone know if they are continuing interviews this week? Did anyone who interviewed last week receive a call?

I interviewed late last week and was told they would be continuing interviews into this week. I think this week is the last week of interviews. I haven't heard anything back yet. Not super hopeful either--it seems like a lot of people are interviewing.

For those who have already received a formal offer, does it come via a phone call or email?

You get a phone call from HR who will then confirm your email address and send you the tentative offer. You have to fill out a form and send it back and then the "final" official offer will come a few days later.

Looks like it's a week after they first inquire after references?

About a week, yeah. My references were all available the first day they were contacted, but I'm sure there's some variability there for other people, especially with the holidays.

Perhaps. I had my references called last week. Seems like that's been pro forma in the past for an actual offer. I'll cross my fingers for another day or two then unpack my bags.

If you had the references call, you are almost guaranteed an offer. If you don't hear from them in a couple days, maybe give them a call. I got an email on Friday from HR with the formal offer, and the email specifically stated that to save time, they were skipping the phone call and sending an email instead. Maybe you fell through the cracks.

As this thread is nearly 3 years old, and still helping. Anyone hired want to share their opinion of the job?
How is working for the USPTO, any apprehension of the new boss... any suggestions for the class?

Honestly I thought the interview I had there a few years ago was kind of a farce. I had good, relevant experience and went in ready to sell myself, only to have 90% of both panels I met with sit around in silence. Only 1-2 people or so per panel bothered to ask questions. I did not get an offer (or even a rejection). In retrospect, they probably knew who they wanted to hire - which wasn't me - and just didn't bother making a real effort to interview me. This left a bad taste in my mouth as I had flown into town on my own dime to do the interview only to get a small semblance of an interview.

It was a real waste of my time, and I prefer not to work for those people now. Look up "Review of Conduct by High Ranking Official in the Hiring of a Trademark Organization Employee" to learn about some of the nepotism that has infested the PTO's trademark division in recent years. It is not a pretty picture.

This is almost definitely true. Everyone starts at GS11, even if they have already advanced to a higher grade level in another agency. I interviewed as a GS12, and would have had to go back to 11 had I been offered and accepted the position. They had this information as part of my application package. The work was also far less varied and entailed a lot less responsibility than I already had as a GS12 attorney in another agency, and they kept pressing me to explain how I'd be able to stay motivated in the USPTO environment.

I can never find openings for a Trademark Examining Attorney online! Is it like a secret society when you need to get a connection to get in?

How did you guys find out openings?

You won't see any posting right now or in the near future, as the USPTO is part of the federal hiring freeze. Though perhaps the USPTO can get an exception to the freeze since they are self-funded - so the absurd idea that a freeze is saving taxpayers money is even more absurd when taxpayers aren't even funding the agency.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
