Summer Associate location
Hi guys. This may be a bit of a silly question but I haven't been able to find any good info on it so I figured I'd ask.
I am interested in working BigLaw after graduating. I want to be in the Chicago, NYC, DC, or Boston markets. If I am not able to get into one of those markets then how beneficial would it be to me to get a job with a firm outside of those markets and hope to move internally?
ex. Jones Day has an office in Dallas. Summer associate and/or work in Dallas and then hope to transfer to one of my desired markets.
Any best practices or advice? Thank you, in advance.

Thanks!
If there are any current associates at any large law firms that could chime in then I would really appreciate it.

It's possible, but I wouldn't count on it unless you have an objectively good reason for transferring, such as a spouse's job. Biglaw offices can be territorial about their people, especially as class sizes shrink. Definitely don't mention it to anyone at the firm over the summer. Better yet, don't mention it until it's absolutely necessary.
I'm assuming you're a 1L, in which case now is too early to think about this question. Focus on grades and beefing up your ties to your preferred markets if you can. Come back if and when you have options during or after OCI.

I've had classmates successfully summer at one city, and transfer to another city (granted within the same state) after they were offered a position. I think the wise thing to do would be to confide in a mentor or someone you can trust during your summer there, and see what opportunities there are. As far as my firm, I know it's relatively easy to do so as long as there's a position open and you have worked with the partner/group in the target city.

You should probably assume that getting a true, name-brand big firm job in a big city will be easier than getting one in a smaller locale.
If you have extensive ties to a particular small market, that might be a different equation.

Suppose an individual spends his or her summer with a satellite office of a V5 firm located in their home market... Any guess on whether that individual would be able to move to the NYC office?thesealocust wrote:You should probably assume that getting a true, name-brand big firm job in a big city will be easier than getting one in a smaller locale.
