RI Work?

I've been targeting RI as a market for my mass mailing and networking (as a 2L). It isn't a large market, but I have strong ties and would be fine living there. Other than two BigLaw firms that have already advertised for jobs there, it seems that most firms are mid-law (and RI is largely dominated by small law) and do not hire until later.
Does anyone have advice on where/when to apply for RI? I've applied to the mid-sized firms and satellite offices I have found, but most of them say they are not hiring summers (or that they won't look until spring).
I don't want to totally miss a potential market due to lack of information, so I figured I would post here to see if anyone had advice!
