Anyone have tips on 2L SA that doesn't offer 100%

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Oct 07, 2013 10:22 pm

Hey guys. Does anyone have any good tips on how to secure a fulltime offer during a 2L Summer Associate summer?

The firm does not pit their SAs against each other. It is ideal for them to retain 100% of their SAs, but they do not force the decision. The firm has a bit of a fratty vibe, but they also work really hard. When deciding whether or not to offer the office does a full firm vote. I believe even secretaries get to vote and generally they are looking for a close to 100% vote, with some dissenters.

I have already talked to a few newer associates to get some tips and anything from you guys would be just as welcome.

Don't mess up. Don't turn down social events, don't be late, don't dress inappropriately, don't miss deadlines. Communicate with everyone you work with so they aren't unaware what you are doing or worried that you are going to miss a deadline. Work hard but don't be a bragging douche about how hardcore you are. Be friendly but these people are not your friends at this point, they are your evaluators and you shouldn't be getting drunk and sharing your deepest secrets and fears or some shit.

Also, if no one messes up and they don't have room for everyone, they will fuck you over no matter what so to some extent don't worry so much, it could be completely out of your control.

Starting today, assuming you have no other options, plan your job search as if you've got nothing lined up for the summer. Apply to every single clerkship you can find, do externships, keep your ear to the ground about government hiring, etc. A firm that is willing to waste money on you (your pay, time it takes to arrange the summer program, time it takes to get/grade assignments without any return on the investment if they don't hire you) and play with the careers of its summers year in and year out does not deserve the benefit of the doubt. Think about it like this: they've proven they are willing to waste money in order to play with your career. Do not expect them to be fair or rational.

Also, just as a head's up, it's going to be absolutely miserable to be in that environment. One of the ways to cope is to have solid backup plans so that you don't feel like your career is riding on every assignment or social event.
