Approaching Defense-side Work

Recent grad here, currently clerking at a midsized plaintiffs firm. I've had prior plaintiffs-side experience but am interested in trying to find entry level defense side attorney positions. I 2L summered at a different plaintiffs firm and my only defense experience is a semester long externship at a firm. My grades/school likely put me out of reach of any potential big law entry level hiring, but I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to try to reach out to perhaps midsized defense firms? I know finding/obtaining this sort of position will be difficult. Is a lack of prior defense side experience going to be a serious issue?
