The footnote in this article packs a punch. Dare I say, the most famous footnote in Kasowitz recruiting history?Anonymous User wrote:http://abovethelaw.com/2013/09/a-fall-r ... me-offers/

When Kasowitz rejected my snail-mail application back in August, I felt kind of bad for that entire day, like I had the cred's but not the X factor.
I'll take my V30 offer and drink tonight to what was a blessing in disguise--being rejected by this "elite" litigation boutique and subsequently avoiding the dilemma of either choosing them (exposing myself to the risk of a no-offer) or having my offer revoked after wasting time and money on a CB.

Whoever sent that email to Above the Law... it's a pretty epic email, but I might try to do some damage control. It will be abundantly clear to the firm who it was, and they'll have no reason not to go scorched earth on you at this point.
A major law firm is a bad enemy to have in any context, but as a law student... toothpaste, tubes, etc. but you might ask ATL to take the full email down?

I'm pretty sure I know who the person is. If I'm right, s/he already has lots of offers. What can the brilliant legal minds even do at this point?thesealocust wrote:Whoever sent that email to Above the Law... it's a pretty epic email, but I might try to do some damage control. What is Kasowitz going to tell other firms about this person? Barring something heinous not being disclosed, Kasowitz just comes off looking like a dick. They can scorch the earth all they want, I don't think other firms will feel too much heat.thesealocust wrote:Whoever sent that email to Above the Law... it's a pretty epic email, but I might try to do some damage control. Further evidence that the 2L OCI hiring model is unsustainable? It seems that in a moneyball era, law firms are still using astrology to make some of their most important decisions.

Yes, because one firm miscalculated its yield rate or the yield rate was abnormally too high this year, the 2L OCI hiring model is unsustainable. Very good point.Anonymous User wrote:Further evidence that the 2L OCI hiring model is unsustainable? Exactly. Hiring and recruiting departments at big firms, especially in major markets, can be pretty buddy-buddy with each other. As dickish as Kasowitz as a firm may come across, firms are all about discretion (and all about not winding up on ATL), and people talk...Anonymous User wrote:What is Kasowitz going to tell other firms about this person?
I'm not saying it wasn't delicious justice porn, I'm just saying it might not be a career enhancing move.

Is it possible that Kasowitz got a lot of unanticipated acceptances because hiring's been so bad this year that people who'd normally choose more elite firms have been left with Kasowitz as their best or only option? No disrespect intended.

Anyone know how many offers a firm like this would normally give in hopes of landing 25 summers?

This was my guess. It's possible their yield rate is just astronomically higher than in the past. If so, I feel sort of sorry for them, though making offers they weren't capable of honoring means it's still their fault.Anonymous User wrote:Is it possible that Kasowitz got a lot of unanticipated acceptances because hiring's been so bad this year that people who'd normally choose more elite firms have been left with Kasowitz as their best or only option? It's true that a lot of them know each other, but what is the Kasowitz recruiting dept. going to do? Send out a mass email to all of the recruiting dept.'s naming the person in question and asking whether she/he will be going to one of their firms?thesealocust wrote:Anonymous User wrote:I'm pretty sure I know who the person is. Although it would be interesting to read the follow up on ATL about how Kasowitz hunted down and destroyed the career of a law student after they told a blog about recruiting practices that violate NALP... that would be quite the press.
Either way, no one really likes Kasowitz anyway. They're too douchy in litigation. I can't see a firm no offering a summer because she/he put published what Kasowitz did. Kasowitz showed no loyalty to him/her so why show any loyalty back?

Jack is a recruiter at Name & Ampersand LLP. One of his best friends in the industry is a recruiter at Kasowitz.
While downing mimosas at Sunday brunch, they talk about the latest ATL drama. Kasowitz recruiter mentions that they think the firm is handling it poorly, but it's hard to manage yield and what can you do.
Laughter. Mimosas.
Jack asks if they know who it was. Kasowitz recruiter doesn't immediately volunteer the information, but mimosas. Kasowitz recruiter mentions that it's Doe from Prestigious Law School.
No shit - says Jack. We actually just finished a 2nd look for Doe. I spent like an hour last week trying to find somebody who could talk to him about Boring Practice Area that Doe cares about.
You don't say, says Kasowitz recruiter. Doe seemed cool, but blabbing to ATL definitely makes me my life harder.
Haha, I bet, says Jack.
~time passes~
Jack now happens to know that Doe wrote an email to Above the Law dishing dirt and naming names on Kasowitz. Jack also has a direct say in Doe's professional future.
Does Jack do anything further? Does Jack side with Kasowitz or with Doe? Does Jack pass it along the grape vine? Even inadvertently? Keep it in mind come summer review time?
If you're Doe, you'd rather not be in a position to find out.

I think it would be in Kasowitz's best interest to just lay low about this.thesealocust wrote:Whoever sent that email to Above the Law... it's a pretty epic email, but I might try to do some damage control.
