New associate banter
Our billing software looks like a shitty Geocities webpage from 1993. I'm not sure if I logged my hours this week or not. Will have to check with accounting.
Love my office furniture and the break room having good coffee and sodas.
Still not sure if I'll reliably get enough work, but my gunning for projects will probably result in being totally pwnt three weeks from now.
I want dat first paycheck so bad... because I'm basically insolvent.

Soda machines are a helluva perk. Who needs business development accounts and healthcare when there's Goldfish snack packets and D Coke on every floor?
Pretty busy so far, which is good. I'm like the only young associate in my department which means lots or work and lots of opportinities. Blessing and a curse I suppose since I'll be doing lots of bitchwork, but also getting cool opportunities relative to most first years. I love both of my bosses, they're gonna be challenging and keep me busy, but they are chill as fuck and respect that I have a life.
Interested to see how hours are once I get integrated into some projects. Right now it'd just lots of crumbs.

Also, don't hate on rationing diet coke. I hoard them like a squirrel hoarding acorns in the winter to save myself from vending machine fees. Each soda saved is like +1 slice of dollar pizza yo.

Massive drink selection (good vitamin water flavored go fast doe), espresso machine, and free beer at my office. Pretty cool.

I am not going to read the whole other thread;what's the reasoning on why can't we have a forum?thesealocust wrote:If only we had a forum for attorneys / law school gradsIAFG wrote:I am absurdly broke. I will give myself an anon banter nickname. Like a porn name, only I have a small dick so I work in litigation instead of porn. Let's call me "Moose."IAFG wrote:I am absurdly broke. Just be careful. Right now it is super important take care of your health, as the ramifications down the line can be expensive. I gained around 25 lbs my first year, and it's very easy to do that sitting at a desk all day, eating cheap street food, and then eating nice big meals paid for by the client. Also, don't hate on rationing diet coke. I've managed to get healthy again, but it's easier to be preventative. Eat healthy and don't skimp $$$ to make sure you do. You'll just end up paying that $$$ down the line when it's too late.

At a small firm.
I'm loving my work so far. The place I'm at is young (only 5 years old) and all of the partners are in their mid-thirties and are super chill. Fridays end with Xbox and beer and fresh baked cookies.
Apparently some work I did for a client convinced them that they want to transfer all their legal work to our firm. Notbad.jpg
Going golfing with a client today. I suck at golfing.
The only reason I wasn't broke is because I got my security deposit back from my apartment in NYC. If I didn't have that I don't know how I would've lived over the past few weeks.

Yep. They say the hold up is figuring out how to validate credentials but that they're otherwise committed to the cause...IAFG wrote:Ah, so until then we're just obnoxiously whining. Got it.
I hear that - excellent advice. I actually got the same lecture from a shiny black car driver one night, and it was kind of weird but clearly he'd seen a lot of us new fish totally lose ourselves after starting.Fresh Prince wrote:Just be careful. It's extremely frustrating though... working a bazillion hours per day, every weekday and many (sometimes most) weekends, and then the "right" answer is to spend your scant free time at the gym or asleep. I've tried it both ways ("I will eat snickers ice cream bars for each meal and sleep 3 hours per night" and "I will watch what I eat, leave work at 10, go to the gym, and be in bed by midnight every night") and they both suck in very different ways...

Re: New associate banter
Find time to make meals. I cook lunch for the week on the weekend. It saves money and maintains health. A big reason people gain weight in biglaw is the meals from outside. When you eat out, it's extremely difficult to control your portions (even of you are intending to push your leftovers to lunch the next day).
After my first 6 months in NYC biglaw, I was able to trim my living budget to around $300-$400 a month. Allowed me to rent a nicer place and save as well.

So you're planning to retire at 30 like I am ? For those of us with no cooking abilities, a slice or two of dollar pizza, a protein shake and a multivatimin isn't SO bad...Fresh Prince wrote:After my first 6 months in NYC biglaw, I was able to trim my living budget to around $300-$400 a month. I'm moving in with a roommate and planning to slash some other expenses too... eat it, student loans.

Re: New associate banter
I've traditionally been a good eater. I'll splurge here and there, but for the most part I cooked all my meals and maintained a balanced diet. In the past three weeks all that has gone out the window and my body is revolting. I need to start cooking meals for the week on the weekend and what not because I feel like crap today and it's all because of what I've been shoving down my mouth.....pause....

Thanks for the advice; sounds like it's doable . What about in terms of Seamless ordering for late nights? Just try not to order the least healthy thing and portion as much as possible? Or try and cook dinners too, even if it costs more?Fresh Prince wrote:Find time to make meals. I cook lunch for the week on the weekend. It saves money and maintains health. Any ideas on veggies that are good to pack and bring to the office? Pan seared green beans would probably travel well. Mushrooms too.

If you're ordering from seamless, I recommend basing the order on grilled meat. Grilled chicken skewers from a Thai place, grilled chicken based Mexican dishes, grilled chicken sandwiches, etc. can all be satisfying delivery food and actually pretty healthy (high in protein/low in calories), especially if you try to get veggies or at least avoid things like sides of fries/chips/desert.
If you're bringing food from home, greek yogurt is awesomely healthy.

Re: New associate banter
Not at a firm but I just started a job this week. Thus far, the only things I have done are: make a few phone calls to introduce myself to people, wonder if I will be able to do work when I actually get some, chuckle in my head every time I remember I have a secretary named Remington and think about how much I want my first pay check. Ohh, and complain about how much the computer they gave me sucks.
On the bright side, apparently my boss is in the office like three hours a week, so, I can get away with doing nothing.

Beets are actually really good cold. I bake them whole in tin foil on Sundays, peel and chop them, and then they can go in regular salad, cold pasta salad, or be eaten alone with a touch of honey or sprinkle of parmesan.IAFG wrote:Any ideas on veggies that are good to pack and bring to the office? Also easy to make in a batch and eat cold is corn salad (corn cut off of the cob, some chopped cherry tomatoes and onion, and a little bit of balsamic vinegar).
