Well I mean yeah why not. Until you have that first offer in hand, spending thirty seconds to fill those out is still a better use of your time than, say, reading tea leaves.

I wouldn't stop with the online form though if you really cared about the place. Start up the chain after you've been referred there and havent heard back. If you catch the interest of a partner and they want you to be screened, that's all that will matter.

Well, for example, I didn't quite research Covington's grade cut-off until after I had materials set up and and email to their recruiting manager scheduled to send off. I got so lost in sending out a ton of letters that I forgot to see if the firm is actually looking to people like me as candidates.

I'm more concerned (out of my paranoia) that I'll send my letter to Covington or Wachtell and they'll end up spreading the word that this d-bag is mass-mailing, do not hire and my mugshot appears as a print-out under the desks of every secretary in America.

fwiw i received screeners/cbs from mass mail for places where I am "below the grade cut off". sometimes the cut offs are hard bright lines, sometimes they're guidelines. you've got nothing to lose by mailing.

I think you should definitely try to re-send a lot of them, especially the ones you followed up with this past week if you didn't re-submit your materials.

My understanding is that July is incredibly early for recruiters, and I wouldn't be surprised if a gigantic proportion of your apps simply got buried in the pile, and probably toward the bottom. Put your apps back on top where they belong and I think you may see more results.

I know this is a stressful time, but you really need to turn down the paranoia a bit. Nobody is going to care that you applied to a reach firm; certainly not enough to actually tell other people about it.

This really isn't true. Hiring is very idiosyncratic, and few grade cutoffs are bright lines.

I had quite a bit more success once I followed up and said, "I'll be in X market from August y-z. I'd love to meet with you then if you have time." Buy the plane tickets on a wing and a prayer and then hustle your buns off to get at least a lunch with someone.

That's a soft ding in my experience but reading tea leaves never did anyone any good so don't think about it too hard

Screener offers range from immediate to months later. There isn't really a "usual" when it comes to mass mailing

I got a Skadden DC screener and callback from mass-mail after being rejected from an off-campus interview screener with Skadden NYC. Don't be so negative.

a few days ago there was a thread about the online app things but I can't find it so I figured I'd just post here.

I think the thread was asking whether anyone had ever heard back from an online app (as opposed to mass mail). Unless I'm reading my spreadsheet wrong, I heard back from 2 today: a DC firm with grades reqs way above what mine are (rejection), and (the more interesting one) a straight to callback with a NYC market firm (but not headquartered in NYC). I applied to the DC firm July 31st, and the NYC firm about a month ago.
