Hey all, some inspiration for those still mass mailing. I struck out at OCI (not a single callback received) and today just received my first offer from a V100 NYC firm from a cb I got mass mailing a couple weeks ago.

There's still positions out there. I literally just followed up with a bunch of firms and got a couple more cbs.

(All thanks to DF, IAFG, radlulz, bk etc. and everyone who encouraged us 2Ls to keep mass-mailing, I literally wouldn't have done it without you.)

How are you following up? I have followed up each time after LR and MC, and I do not know how else to follow up at this point

Just email--I generally sent 3 emails each spaced 2-3 weeks apart. Initial application, 1st follow up, and final follow up. I also used tailored (and apparently effective cover letters) that mentioned the 1-3 things that I felt made me a good candidate. Also I told them I would be in the area and financed my own cbs, which likely helped.

ANON from above -> what do you put in your subject header? Follow-up on application?

I tried a few different things but the nucleus and bulk of it is normally "Summer Associate Application." I've never used "Follow-Up" I thought about it but figured they didn't care that much. Sometimes I put my school (T14) and year (2L) in.

ETA: I would put in the first/topic sentence of the cover letter that I was following up on my application. They didn't really seem to care whether or not it was a follow up. I think what they cared about was whether they were looking to fill some spots and it came in at the right time.

For those who think OCI is over, don't give up hope. I got told by a senior partner at a V100 that they're still sorting through applicants and still haven't finalized everything yet

(I'm not the quoted anon):
I've also been told this from firms in DC, and I've been offered interviews as recently in NYC, Chicago, and *Dallas, so there are definitely still firms hiring right now. By recently I mean: I've done a Skype and a phone interview today and I received another invitation this afternoon. Keep plugging!

*ETA: Dallas, not Houston.

Are you getting near immediate responses to your applications?

It varies. The last 3 came after following up (1 came about 2 days later, and the other two came about 10 days later). In my experience, immediate (same day) response is bad.

Also, interested in this.

So I got some good news yesterday that a V100 firm wants to do a phone interview with me this week. Any advice on how to handle a 20 minute phone conversation. I feel like this may be one of my last chances at a top firm in my market so I want to kill it during the interview.

Just for the sake of my sanity, is a phone interview just like a screener or is there a higher chance for a CB?

I think the interview would be just like a screener, but I'd assume higher chance for a CB if they're still looking to hire this late in the game.

I've always thought that a firm wouldn't interview someone from mass-mail if they weren't impressed by your resume and there wasn't at least some chance that you would receive a callback. At OCI, that isn't necessarily the case: they might just be filling slots, or it might be lottery. Or maybe I'm just trying to make myself feel better.

OP

I agree with everything you said, that is what I figured (hoped).

Any tips on how to approach a phone interview would be great.

I don't really have any tips to be honest. It's pretty similar to any screener except they can't see you so you don't need to be in a suit and you can have notes in front of you.

I had a successful phone interview. I wore a suit to feel more professional. Make sure you're in a quiet environment with quality service signal. Additionally, I found standing up really helped and make sure you smile because it comes across. But definitely do your best to avoid talking over them, i.e. have an extra second delay after their question to make sure they're done.

This.

My phone interview was pretty much a screener. Got a CB out of it.

The one big difference is you can have notes handy, which may or may not help

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
