Do you happen to know how many people who make it to the 3rd round get an offer? I've heard completely different things, from the 3rd interview being (almost) a formality and an offer is very likely, to making it to the 3rd round doesn't mean anything necessarily. And do you know the general timeline for hiring? Just wondering if I missed the hiring boat for Miami since I have no offer at this point.

Miami SAO from the quote here again. I'm not privy to a ton of hiring info because I'm not on the hiring committee, so consider this slightly more informed speculation. With respect to the 3rd Round, based on what I've heard (an experienced when I was interviewing) it's less of a formality here than other offices. So it's not unheard of to go through Round 3 and not get an offer.

I don't think you're out of the running just yet. The timeline is weird. In my class we had people hired in December-April before the starting August class. There were people who interviewed in January and didn't get offers until March/April. My advice to you is just stay in contact with recruiting coordinator and let him know you're interested.

On a similarly related note. This years hiring has been a little weird. The office usually brings in a Spring class of about 10-12 and a fall class of around 40. For reasons that are unknown to me, it appears that there isn't going to be a Spring class this year. So we're hiring 10 or so less lawyers.

I got this as well. I received the email in early January, a few weeks after my 3rd round interview. It can't be a bad sign, but I dont trust anything that isnt an offer...Also, the bold faced DO NOT DECLINE ANY OFFERS BECAUSE OF THIS EMAIL also leave me hesitant.

Do you all have anything about a timeline in your email? Mine just says we ll pick people when we are done interviewing.

Mine didn't. Though during my interview DA Rice said that they would be making offers in April.

And I agree-- it isn't an offer but it makes me feel better. They are clearing cutting people right after the third round so at least this means we're still in the running.

Nope - heard nothing. Hopefully there is some news soon.

The longer and longer Brooklyn waits, the more and more I start to get worried they're not going to hire a class this year...

I wonder the same thing. But since the new classes have always started in January, it still leaves plenty of time to hire a new class. On the bright side, if they do hire a new class the competition will be lower since every one else will have accepted jobs by then!

That's a good point I hadn't considered! For those of us out of state, though, it's going to be a mess for bar-related things if we can't be sure we'll be taking NY bar, and so on.

My mind has been gone for a while. I'm trying to formulate a backup plan. What do people who want to be prosecutors, but strike out do for a year? I know that I'll reapply for the next cycle, but I have no clue what kind of work I can/should pursue in the interim.

Many smaller DA's offices only hire after the bar, so try them. Failing that:

If your wallet can afford the hit for a while, I'd say go for one of the unpaid "Special" AUSA positions. It will at least give you some prosecutorial experience to discuss in the next cycle.

Otherwise, anything you can get that is remotely related to litigation.

SAUSA positions require experience, typically, though some might be available for 3Ls.

My plan is to clerk somewhere for a year. That way I can still be eligible for hire once the clerkship is finished.

If money isn't an issue, or you're able to work part-time for a year or so, you can also work pro bono at one of the DA Offices. I know some people were doing that at Queens and Brooklyn.

No other competing offers and I wasn't a former intern. From what I've heard, I think I'm somewhat of an anomaly. I was interviewing at other New York offices, but Queens was my first choice so I accepted on the spot.

No other competing offers and I wasn't a former intern. From what I've heard, I think I'm somewhat of an anomaly. I was interviewing at other New York offices, but Queens was my first choice so I accepted on the spot.

Any idea when other offers might be made?

Friend of mine had 3rd round with Nassau this week, got an offer a few hours later. Second time I heard this happening.

Sounds like it, but like someone mentioned earlier, its still better than being outright rejected, which is also possible. I'd expect that once they're finished with all their third rounds, have all their "must-hires" already accounted for, they'll start going down the list. Definitely sucks as someone waiting to hear back.
