It can't hurt to apply, but from my experience, they want post-clerkships and laterals. Your best bet is to get on App. Div./NJ Supreme (and Law Div. assignment judges) applications.

ETA: If you've had 1L/2L SA's, definitely apply to Supreme. They pay close to federal clerkship rates and you shouldn't have a problem getting a place like Lowenstein or McCarter English afterwards; although I can see with your SA's one of the two potentially biting now.

Lowenstein is a better bet than McCarter

Yeah, that sounds about right. I've known young associates who burned out of there faster than their NYC BigLaw counterparts, which is saying something. So I'd imagine they could probably use well-credentialed first-year bodies.

Ordinarily (meaning not NJ) it depends on the firm, but most will give you either a clerking bonus and start you as a first year, or no bonus but start you as a second year.
Because NJ doesn't follow NYC lockstep, and because a lot of firms stopped hiring SAs and 1st year associates, who knows? For firms like McCarter and Gibbons I am unable to find recent data that would be of use to us.

Going to hit up all of them regardless. Cole is requesting resumes from my school, so here's hoping I get a bite somewhere. I have super strong ties to the state since I lived there all my life.

FWIW, I don't have much interest in clerking. If I strike out in NJ, I'll be content to stay where I am until I can lateral. Place where I am at now is fantastic for young attorneys (you do depos your first year with the firm!).

Thanks for the advice, though. I truly appreciate it.

I wish that I had a bit more of a sure footing into a NJ firm, but it is what it is.

I go to a NJ school. Interviewed with most of the NJ firms that take SAs. Most on this list don't. Some may take summer law clerks, but they won't normally decide until spring. Get your hands on the NJ Law Journal Summer SA edition. They list all the firms with incoming SA classed, how many slots, how much they pay etc. There may be about 10-12 firms worth reaching out to now. The rest wont decide if the are gonna have a summer until spring. Others don't do SA programs at all anymore and only hire after judicial clerkships.

Also, be prepared to wait for a while for the firms that do have SA programs to decide whether or not they will give you an offer or not. One New Jersey firm *cough, Bressler Amery, cough* did not reject me until November. I had my screener and callback with them in August. I want to say Riker Danzig and Day Pitney were also pretty slow. I may have been on a "hold" list though to be fair. Others may have received their post callback dings a lot quicker.

Either way, NJ is hard to crack! with the legal market continuing to shrink, they have been able to snag T-14 students pretty easy. So unless you are T-14 or the top, top, top of your class at a NJ school, i definitely would apply to other markets as well.

If you "subscribe" you can see it online. My NJ School Law Library had a copy last year. That's what I used. I may have a copy back in apartment in NJ. If I can find it when I return in a few weeks I'll post the info.
