Mass mail your ass off. Put NALP away, bring out Martindale, and mail every firm with more than 10 attorneys. You might have to call these firms to get a working email address, and the response rate will be very low, but you need every possibility you can get at this point. I would think there should be at least 70 firms on your Chicago mailing list and 200 (probably a lot more) on your NY one, if you need some kind of target.
You should also expand the search to any other markets that you could conceivably have ties to or tell a convincing story about why you want to be there. DC is the easiest one off the top of my head, but if there's anywhere you've lived / have family / went to college / really anything.
Other than interview prep and broad application, there's really not very much you can do at this point. Hiring is definitely not over yet, so keep mailing and don't get discouraged.
