pro bono during SA

Postby PriOSky » Thu May 23, 2013 8:49 am

I would like to do pro bono work over the summer for a variety of reasons (e.g. personal fulfillment, great learning experiences, school's pro bono graduation requirement). What's an appropriate number of hours of pro bono work to take on as a summer associate?

As many as you want/they'll give you? Almost all of the billable matters you're working on will likely be written off. Unless you want a spot in a competitive practice area (in which case you should obviously do as many assignments for them as possible) and as long as you do do enough non-pro bono work that they have faith in your abilities in whatever practice area you do end up in, I don't think it makes a big difference.

Make sure you can find a project you can do in the summer. You won't have that much time. But this pro bono work is definitely a distant second to doing substantive work in a practice area. Don't tell anyone you need pro bono to get " personal fulfillment." If you can find a partner doing a high level pro bono project, grab onto a piece of that work.

My firm is not necessarily one of the big probono firms but is going to try to get all summers 50 hours to fulfill the ny bar requirements.

IMO, the only way to approach this is to let your partner/supervisor know you want to do pro bono work, and then wait and hope they assign you some.

If I were you:
1. I would not take time off from SA for this.
2. I would not try to solicit pro bono work on my own.
