The advantage of an e-mail is that you can get them to your interviewers very quickly after the interview. Especially in a situation where the decision turn-around is going to be fast, a written note may take longer to get to them. I prefer a written note, since it's more personal, but e-mail appears to be acceptable.

I don't think that my thank-you e-mails pushed employers to hire me, but it probably did not hurt.
