How likely are alternate (1)'s and (2)'s at non-NYC V10/20?

I'd say 1 or 2 are pretty likely (but nothing is a given). Lots of people will decline for lots of reasons. We applied a while ago. You only need one or two to drop it seems.

also, i got an interview with a firm i was pretty sure i was completely out of their grade range. is that good? or do you think they aren't really planning on hiring anyone and just wanted to fill up interview slots? if i got a preselect can i stop worrying about my grades and just focus on making a good interview impression? my grades are only slightly better after 2nd semester.

Firms are incredibly diverse, even IP only. A lot emphasize this. Being any minority will be a boost, not a negative. Yes, being a woman is a minority.

As for grade ranges, its just a means of screening the pile. If they like what else they saw, it really doesn't matter once they pick you. Could be WE, could have been specific grades or a school or it could have been the rubix cube on your resume.

3L w/ biology-related B.S. (few courses short of patent bar eligibility), no WE, top 30% at T25. Bid only NY/DC firms (not a lot available to 3Ls...) and got two alternate interviews only  . I'm actually not THAT bummed b/c I like my SA so far at an IP-heavy firm. NY/DC firms typically offer close to 100% of their summers and my firm is no exception, but I really don't want to take the chance of being no offered. Since I applied to PLIP, I have booked Patent Law and gotten to the top 20%. Should I reapply to the firms that rejected me at PLIP? I feel like my improvement may not be significant enough to overcome whatever it was that led them to reject me. I am only interested in IP lit. Thanks

This has been covered before.

What are they doing to do? Say no extra hard? Of course continue to apply through other venues. You don't even know if they made it to your resume before they filled their slots.

just to be clear, we dont have to do anything if we are preselected for an interview and want to interview? Just ride it out?

T20, chem, top 20%, no WE, 5 preselects and 2 alts... Not bad I guess?

My question is that some of the preselect firms are very competitive (think Kirkland range) and the chance of getting offers are really low... I really like one of the preselect firms but don't have ties to the market. And I didn't meet a firm's requirement either and they probably were using me to fill a blank spot. So my expectations should be really low at the patent fair I guess.

16 preselects, so I'm pretty darn happy.

Top 15% at a T2, EE undergrad, no WE. I have a SA at an IP firm this summer which was obviously on my resume, not sure if that affected the number I got at all

If it just says "alternate" with no number next to it does that mean the firm didn't rank alternates or you're alternate 1?

The email said that not every firm ranked their alternates. I'd imagine you're in a general pool with the other 15 alternates. I got some that were ranked and some that weren't.

Easy answer to 3L: you have to ask yourself:
Is this genuinely a job search or primarily just to cover your ass if you don't get a permanent position?
If you already knew that you had the permanent job in your pocket, would you bother with PLIP?
If ass-covering, how secure do you feel in your SA? your supervisor?
How much $$$ is it worth to cover that possibility of not getting a job at the end of the summer?

Look up my PLIP e-mail address and to accept interviews select "Transfer preselect to", type me in, and you should be good to go!

Yep, women have the "minority edge". It seems that at OCI, it's not just the traditional URM's of the education world, but anyone other than a pure-blond man can exert some sort of edge. At a Diversity fair, I saw not only African-Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, but also Asians of various types as well. There was also one white guy who claimed that he was there b/c of his 1/8 Chechnyan heritage on his mom's side. I thought it was all a joke until I didn't notice him laughing. Last I heard, he walked off with a couple CB's.

Had 18 preselect (13 day 1, 5 day 2) and cancelled 3 of the 1st day ones. 10 in a day is about all I can imagine myself doing at a reasonably high level!

Great Idea, but it wouldn't work unless I forwarded you my transcript, resume, and identity also. HaHa.

I'd like to start by saying that there's nothing terribly wrong with cancelling interviews, if you don't think you can handle that many in a day. Also, many people on this board who are alternates will be very grateful to you. However, my advice to anyone with a full day of interviews will always be to just tough it out for the day. Each and every screener is an opportunity at a job and you never know how the process will shake out down the road. Each screener is also an incredible opportunity to practice your interviewing skills, because you'll get either direct or indirect (non-verbal) feedback immediately, which is really helpful for your remaining interviews.

For anyone else considering cancelling, I can tell you that having 16 screeners in 1 day is doable. My advice is to keep all of them and prepare for each one equally, even if you have a completely full day's worth.

I had a few firms ask me what other firms I was interviewing with at PILP. I took it as a compliment that they were interested enough in me enough to ask where else I was interviewing. I also ended up getting offers from those firms, so I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that they ask about it, and I was honest with them. You don't have to answer specifically with "one" or "two" or whatever...you can just say you have other interviews and maybe drop a firm or two but keep it vague.
