1L here. Next week I have an interview w/ a city attorneys office and they are interviewing three of us at the same time.

I have never been in a situation like this. I would appreciate some advice on how to kill it. Thanks.

Wait . . . they're interviewing all three candidates for the position at the same time, in the same room? Are you sure about that? What exactly did they tell you?

Is it an unpaid internship? It's very possible that you've pretty much already been hired and this "interview" is going to be more of an info session.

You want to imply negative things about the other two interviewees without making it to obvious.

Yes, it is an unpaid internship and there are multiple positions available in multiple practice groups. So it is not that drastic. I just find it odd and sort of awkward.


I wish it was an info session but the lady I have been corresponding w/ keeps calling it an interview.

We do that at our work. (Not a firm, or legal exactly..) The first, initial interview is usually a group interview. That usually consists of a group session (everyone discuss this topic) and then individuals are split off and given a fairly short (15 min) one-on-one interview.

From what I've seen, one of the keys is NOT to bash or worry about the others. Answer all the questions they ask, don't talk over other people, be polite and do what you can to shine. Address the other applicants/interviewees civilly.

What we do is ask a question and then ask who would like to speak first. It's okay to volunteer, but don't talk over someone. Give it a second to see if someone will jump on it.

Do not "steal" anyone's answer because it makes you look like you don't have an original thought. You can, however, say that you agree, but think <<original thought from you>> is also valuable / important. Listen to the other applicants, but be thinking of something original that you can add - if they give all interviewees a chance to speak, do not be silent on any of the questions.
