Does anyone know the deal with this firm? I bid on them at OCI (top 5 people in my class), got interviews everywhere except here including better firms. They went from towards the top of my list to I'm not even applying 2l year.

They really, really want strong local or nearby ties.

Here's what I would say. I don't know which office you are discussing but let's say Nashville. It's not that they care about ties for their own sake, they are just tired of taking top candidates who then go to NY or DC. If you actually want to be in Nashville and they are your top choice, I would consider sending the hiring partner an email saying just that. Just acknowledge that your intent to stay in Nashville might not be visible from your résumé so you wanted to let him know how serious you are about it. The Nashville office certainly has a strong preference for ties but I do know of people they have hired without them.

I was really impressed with the people. it seemed like a really great group of people when I went through the hiring process. If I had ended up in Nashville, that is where I'd want to be. But I went to DC/NY...

This is OP, thanks for the feedback. It's not an AL office, but I'm not originally from the state and I know an associate in the office who I talked with pre-law school about whether I would stay in the state or leave, so it sounds like ties could be the issue (I'm not from the region originally).
