1L Summer +/- DOJ Offer for the PD minded

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Feb 06, 2013 6:26 pm

I have an offer for a summer internship from the DOJ. I have one week to respond. The office is in a state/city in which I DON'T hope to live, with a division for whom I DON'T hope to work after graduation. The subject matter of the activity of this department is completely unrelated to that of the department for which I hope to work.

I would love work for the DOJ after graduation, but not this particular department (the EEOC and the ENRD are the departments for which I'd like to work). I am top-third at a T-10, but I understand that nobody is a shoo-in for a DOJ honors job. I'd also very much like to work as a Public Defender. My fear is that working at this particular office (not the USAO, but still, obviously, on the enforcement side of its subject matter), might be seen down the road as "working for the devil."

I have an application in at the EEOC in the city in which I hope to work after graduation.
I have an application in at the PD in the city in which I hope to work after graduation.
I have heard nothing from the EEOC, and I have an interview scheduled in a month with the latter.

Should I just take this DOJ offer? Should I try to use it as leverage with the EEOC and the PD in my city of choice?

1L DOJ is pretty decent but true-believer type PDs will view government work as almost an auto-ding. Also, the EEOC hasn't hired attorneys for a few years and even if they are hiring when you are a 3L, it'll be like, 3 people in the entire country. You probably won't get DOJ honors either, because that's true of almost everyone.
