Bring up a 1L SA with a partner I've networked with?

Postby manofjustice » Tue Dec 25, 2012 7:22 pm

I have been having lunch and dinner with a V50 partner. We are getting along quite well.

Should I bring up a 1L SA? If so, how?

I'd probably wait for the third date. Does the partner initiate more of the texts, or do you? Have you talked about exclusivity yet?

Casually bring up your search for summer employment during the conversation. Talk about where you've applied, what you like, etc. See if s/he gets the hint (if s/he doesn't say anything, the answer is no)

Makes sense. I prolly missed that opportunity the last time I saw him. Guess I'll have to do it by email.

"get some advice on summer employment opportunities. I am looking to stay in the [] area. I am hoping you may have some advice."

Too direct? Subtle enough?

Depends on your relationship. If you're meeting for lunch/dinner again and s/he asks how you're doing or asks how law school is going, say that you're in the process of looking for summer employment, explaining what you want and what you're doing. See if s/he offers to help

Will you vote for me for most helpful top-law-schools.com/forums poster if I tell you how to handle this? Normally I offer advice unconditionally, but you're a special soul

I've been giving bad advice in this thread.

TCR is to break into the partner's home (bonus points if you sneak in through the chimney) early in the morning, walk into the bathroom while s/he's in the shower, and give him/her a choice:
A) you get an SA and no one will mention it ever again
B) you scream loudly until his/her spouse "catches" you being sexually violated

That's brilliant, actually.

Nice!

You're obviously a law student. I don't know this guy, and clearly you're not super comfortable with him, but rule of thumb is to treat people as regular motherfucking people. Just fucking ask him if he could help you get a job. No need to worry about "directness." If anything, being an indirect little bitch waiting for him to ask to hire you is going to make him less compelled. The advice of talking about other jobs without asking him for help is fucking god-awful. At best he's going to think you just don't want to work for him and at worst --little bitch.

Makes perfect sense!

I am actually surprised that I have led myself so astray. It's simple!

Thanks Laxbrah!

Based on this small sample, I recommend cutting back on forms of "to be."

And I would ask whether this partner could help point me in the right direction. Probably nothing more direct than that.

Based on personal experience, if the partner can get u an interview, only take advantage of it now if u think u have a solid shot of landing the job based on stats (T14 with very good grades or really high grades elsewhere). If not, I would wait till its 2L SA time and take advantage of it then.

Reasoning is if you get an interview now but are dinged, chances are less it will pull thru when it counts - 2L SA.

1L SA's are extremely rare and competitive, if u dont have a decent shot of landing it without the connection, it prob. wont pull thru.

I just want to add that a lot of firms have anti-nepotism rules that basically mean the most the partner can do is give your resume to recruiting. Recruiting will probably look at your file sooner rather than later, but you've still got to be competitive

I suppose in that case the worst that could happen is I don't get an interview and I get an easy excuse: it's a 1L SA. That easy excuse should preserve my 2L options.

I've gotten a few of those
