GPA Screening for Interviews

As I'm working on cover letters/resumes to send out once I get my first semester grades, I was really curious as to what most employers look for in a GPA when screening for interviews. For example, at my school, top 10% is usually 3.47-3.50. Would an employer be more likely to look at your class rank and see where you fall within? Or are they looking for more of a certain number and upwards? I know this may be a difficult question to answer, but any help would be much appreciated!

Keep in mind that schools can have really different curves/point weightings for a grade (I think some even have like 4.3s for A+s and stuff). Furthermore, schools have started to do shifty things with grade inflation/GPA altering (see, e.g., http://abovethelaw.com/2010/07/stephen- ... tter-jobs/ ).

In other words, if they're smart they will just care about your rank. If they're very familiar with your school, though, maybe they'd be cool just getting your GPA and not care enough to ask about your rank since they would guesstimate it. My intuition would be that if you're top 30% or higher, include your rank in addition to your GPA.

Not to hijack, but how does this shake out for those schools which do not rank? Obviously GPA is all we have, and there will be some firms familiar enough to estimate on the basis of that GPA, but for other firms, safe to assume we're just out of luck for a ranking?

There are law schools that issue numerical GPAs but do not rank?

Yes, quite a few T14s do that. Mine does not even release top 30% cutoffs.
