I am wondering what standard practice is for law firm hiring committees (and recruiters/all people involved in the hiring process). For someone currently at a biglaw firm and looking to lateral OR for a judicial clerk who has an offer from a biglaw firm (say from working as a summer associate) but is thinking of switching firms - when that person applies to a different biglaw firm does he need to tell the people at that firm to please not tip of his current firm (or the firm he has an offer with) to the fact that he is looking elsewhere or is that just understood?
I assume this must come up frequently when people lateral. You don't want to piss off your current firm, but you want to see what else is out there. Same for clerking, maybe?

I have no firsthand experience, but I have to believe that they know not to do this. The only context I can think of them contacting your current / previous firm is for reference checks. When you give them your references (if they even ask for them), just mention please can they contact you before contacting your references.
