Skadden 1L Scholars Program

Post by BlaqBella » Tue Nov 27, 2012 12:32 pm

Hey TLS,

I was curious to know if anyone participated or know someone who participated in Skadden's pilot program, Skadden 1L Scholars Program, that was first introduced in Summer 2012.

I'm interested in knowing how selective the process and if they only recruit at specific law schools or if 1Ls from various institutions are welcomed to apply.

Thanks!

If I remember correctly, they only hire 4-5 scholars per year, recruit heavily from the front end of the T14, and are particularly looking for diversity superstars. They'll of course welcome submissions from all schools, but I wouldn't pin my hopes on receiving an interview even if I had the traits described above. It's one of the few high-prestige firms that hires non-diversity 1Ls and so the competition will be fierce.

The program is selective because it almost guarantees an offer for the 2L Summer (you have to lose the offer rather than gain it). Skadden interviews weigh personality heavily once you meet a certain grade threshold. As such, you should be prepared for completely random conversations. Last year, they had 2 NYU, 2 Columbia, 2 Harvard, and 1 Stanford student. Their desired class size I think is from 5-8, depending on candidates.

I would write a solid personal statement. Be professional in your interview. Skadden doesn't like wallflowers so be confident but don't go into hubris zone. PM me if you have questions.

Also, the previous post is correct. It is not diversity exclusive so the competition is fierce.

Maybe not diversity exclusive, but the short paragraph description of the program uses the word "diversity" twice... if that's an indication of anything. Also, for anyone's interest, the deadline was yesterday.

Nevermind. I heard it from a friend but I don't know if that's accurate so I removed that info.

Does anyone have info as to when the decisions come out? After my interview, the recruiting team said "early next week" so does that mean today? (freaks out)

It depends on where you are interviewing. I am interviewing in NY and haven't even had my interview yet. I know they have interviews scheduled for all of next week. Also, I was under the impression that there are two rounds of interviews?

Any word yet from NY office? I flew up to the NY office for an interview a couple weeks back and was told that decisions would come out tomorrow Feb. 22nd. Just wanted to see if anyone had heard yet.

Your interviewer told you this date or one of the recruiting people?

The recruiting coordinator also told me the 22nd and I haven't heard back yet.

Well the website says decisions will be made in Feb., so I assume that means tomorrow...
I know of some people who were informed some time ago that they got it in NYC, but not sure if they filled the class yet.
