Working through Sandy, taking Q's

Post by Anonymous User » Sun Oct 28, 2012 7:48 pm

Stub year V5 associate. Billed 12 hours/day average this week. Partner wouldn't let me go home before trains shut down tonight because the client is outside NYC and still needs the work by Monday. Sleeping in my office. Taking Q's.

Partner wouldn't let you work from home or did the travel time make that impossible?

A NYC biglaw firm not letting you take a car home when working late? My guess:

My boyfriend billed over 60 hours this week (and still counting) because a massive project is due Tuesday. At least he's now working from home. I feel for you.

Many (most? all?) major NYC firms have some combination of shower/sleeping rooms.

Sadly I'd consider it a perk. My summer firm didn't and when I got myself into a procrastrophy I slept on the carpet.

S&C is probably floating out into the ocean as we speak, but the other V5 firms aren't in any serious danger of either flooding or power loss due to their location further north and inland on Manhattan.

S&C advises using your firm issued shoulder bag to carry any necessary swimming equipment. Of course, the partnership has been issued S&C speedos.

And any associates needing rescue can wave over-sized S&C beach towels from their windows!

hey dude. sending you love and best wishes through the internets.

what's a "stub year"?

do you think biglaw is on balance a good job?

was the partner a dick or trying to be nice about it?

does it seem like the clients generally have the lawyers by the balls like this, i.e. if something is fucked on our end we just have to figure it out, and excuses won't be tolerated? wasn't there a time when top reputed lawyers didn't have to deal with that kinda stuff?

Fwiw, the clients on my deals have been fairly understanding (they themselves are enduring the onslaught, so they face similar issues). I've still had to work all day, but of course I am working from home. If I lose power, I'm 100% positive I'd be fine from that perspective.

Fwiw, all of the clients I'm working with and the firm also said I can book any hotel close by to the office and get reimbursed. I might regret not taking a room at the mandarin oriental if my power goes out  .
