Got denied for an interview at a firm I really like that I know other people at my school have gotten interviews with earlier. It was a stretch when I applied but still...feels bad, man.

I applied pretty late compared to them (after grades came out, whereas I think most of the people I knew applied before), though I doubt that made a huge difference. Is it worth asking what could have improved the application, or is that frowned upon? (aside from recognizing the answer is probably just "grades").

Have an interview with the NY Fed coming up. Finding it hard to get any information about the program anywhere too.

For a 1L firm job that you admittedly don't have the grades for, I don't see the point in asking. And even if it was something other than grades, you'll probably just get a BS response regardless.

Well, I'm not positive it's grades. That's my suspicion as they are not stellar, probably just above median at mid-T14 (not HYS, not DNCG). It's an IP heavy firm and I have a tech bg (which I know the other people didn't have), so I thought maybe there might have been a bit more leniency on the grades. Maybe they just didn't like me or something, but I didn't even get the interview the others got and I really like this firm and I intend on trying again at fall OCI.

Just wondering if replying back asking why not was something people did, or if it's a complete faux pas.

Does anyone know of Philly firms that are known to allow split summers?

Dude, it's a 1L SA. You probably didn't do anything wrong, and they probably won't be helpful anyway.

I interviewed with the patent group.

Please and thank you! Good luck to you as well.

Got a "rejection letter" from an employer I explicitly turned down over email weeks ago for another gig. Weird!

Just received two 1L SA offers. One firm is in the 75-100 range on the NLJ 250 list and the other is in the 150-200 range. Both are fine with me splitting my summer. Should I split or should I pick one and work there all summer? Also, what about 2L summer? Does the answer change if you are a 2L? I am at a tier 1 school (20 - 40 range) and non-urm. Did I get lucky?

If anyone wants leads to PI jobs in Philly/Boston, please PM me. Knowing another language is probably important, and for Philly, you'd need ties (insular market). And remember to:

Got rejected this morning by a diversity scholar program that I really had high hope on. Did the interview the past weekend and thought it went REALLY well. I prepared my questions well (talked with scholars from last year) and one interviewer said my answer to their question hit the nail on the head. We laughed a lot and they complimented on my skill set (foreign language, growing up overseas, years of experience as a reporter)...

now I feel bad!

Are these lawyers professional pretenders?

A lot of interviewers are outgoing and friendly to everyone. They probably did genuinely like you, but maybe were looking for something different. You can have a good interview and still not have the right combination of prior experience, grades, etc. that they're looking for. Try not to let it bum you out and keep applying to other stuff - there are tons of awesome 1L jobs out there. You'll find something that will be equally good as that program, if not better.

I would sooner assume that they were being honest with you (there's no reason for them to lie — they could have just not said anything about whether your answers were good), but that there were several strong applicants for the position and that you were a strong contender but just not the best fit they saw. You may have had everything they were looking for, except someone else had it more or better. This all bodes well for you, though, I think — it means that you interviewed well and were able to connect with your interviewers.

I got an offer for a public interest gig and the deadline they gave me to accept it is 03/04.
I just had a CB at a big law firm and they are giving me an answer on 03/11. I'm also waiting to hear from a company for an in-house position, but they didn't tell me when they are getting back to applicants.
I felt the interviews went well, but I know how difficult it is to get the actual job.
The truth is I am tired of looking and feel this have kept me from studying.
How bad it would be if I accept the PI offer and later, in the event I get the SA or the in-house job, I tell the PI lady I am not going?
There is no possibility of getting an extension for the PI offer, by the way.

this is hard to say, I think reneging is obviously morally shady and could potentially hurt you in the future if the attorneys there have any sort of connections...but a paid gig is probably too good to pass up

also, the longer you wait the more you're hurting the PI gig given that they won't be able to easily find someone to replace you late in the game
even if the big law firm told you 3/11, it's very possible they will take even longer. I would say, if I were in your shoes, I would have to pass on the PI gig or at least try and ask them for a week extension. Your choice though

I would just pass on the PI gig if you'd much rather do the paid things. I'm sure you can find something else unpaid at the end of the summer.

Quick procedural question: I had a screening interview with a firm and they said they'd "expect candidates to be notified on date X whether they'll receive a call back interview." Yesterday was day X and I have not received any word. Does this mean I'm out? Should I call the hiring partner and see what's up?

Also wondering about this. I have no interest whatsoever in PI, but I got a good offer with a deadline of 2 weeks. I'm still looking for paid stuff in the meantime.

How bad does it look to renege on a PI offer? I should add that my offer is for an NGO abroad, if it makes any difference.

So, I got an offer from a firm, and am still waiting to hear from 2 at which I've done callbacks. Any advice on how to phrase an email telling them that I need to know in the next week or so?

Dear RECRUITER,

My name is ANON and I had a callback on DATE. I am interested in working for YOURFIRM and I was wondering when I should expect to hear back a response. I ask because I have a deadline expiring for another offer on DEADLINE and was wondering if it would be possible to hear back before then. If that is possible I would really appreciate it. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
ANON

I would avoid reneging. While it probably won't hurt you (since I doubt the PI employer is going to take you to task for it), it just looks bad and is a dick move doing it in advance. If you want a possible 1L SA, suck it up and turn down the PI gig. It'll take you a bit more work to keep applying if you don't get it but it's probably worth the chance of getting it.
