Feel sooooo unprepared, even though I'm really excited about my first legal job!

you could, but your job will tell you what you need to know

How about Lexis/Westlaw trainings? Should I do a bunch of them to prepare before starting?

if you really wanted to.. you could alwasy find out if they use lexis or westlaw, and use that one for the rest of 1L.
but you dont need to. if you want, sure you can search out some things immigration law related. but thats such a broad topic, it may be a waste of your time and effort. you may find yourself doing similar things and talking about similar topics, so why waste your time now??

as long as you have a basic conception of either one, youll be fine.

OK, thanks, I'm a bit paranoid. Just worried that the folks from Widener, Drexel, etc. who may be working with me this summer have been exposed to a more practical-oriented, nuts-and-bolts education than me. I'll stop freaking out now, lol. It just sorta bothers me when upperclassmen say that law school classes, other than LRRW, don't "teach you how to be a lawyer".

I've had absolutely no luck with firms, only had one interview invite out of 35 (all sent early January). Targeting NY market, top 15% at CCN. I'm wondering if others have had similar difficulty obtaining interviews.

Top 10% at lower T14. Mass mailed pretty much every major market in December/January and only got 1 interview.

Not sure if you guys are URMs or women, but it appears to get interviews in NY you need to be at YSH or have prior strong connections...doesn't matter if you're top 10% at CCN or below

Top 3-5%, non T-14, lengthy engineering/science work experience (not EE/CS, though). No luck at biglaw proper but turned down an in-house position in my prior field ($1k/wk), accepted an offer from a NYC IP boutique at market and had an offer to interview at another NYC IP boutique at market that I turned down since I had already accepted the other offer.

Sent ~40 unsolicited emails to firms in the first week of December. Phone screener, CB and offer in mid Dec, early Jan, and early Feb, respectively. From the place I turned down, grade request mid Jan and interview request early Feb.

tl;dr: ipsecure

you'll learn what you need to know when you start your 1L summer... while you may need law school classes to help you pass the bar, the law that will be relevant toyou will be the law that your office/ firm/ govt entity/ self find practicing on a daily basis. This also goes for how they want you to write. Sure you'll need CREAC or IRAC or somethign similar, but in a lot of cases it will be a lot informal, except for anythign that goes to court. Then you have to follow the rules of the court, and learn the prefereces of the sitting judge. If you arent going it alone, someone at the office will help you, because tehy want you to represent them propertly, and win.

When the secretary called to set up the interview, she said day X, but on the email she sent me and the interviewers, she wrote day Y. She did not respond to my request for confirmation, so I showed up on day Y. (day X is a few days later)

How fucked am I?

Schools like Drexel just claim this to distract you from their awful reputation.

Who here has an "Interests" section on their resume? I'm getting very conflicting advice re: this from Career Services, profs, etc.

I've included one on all my resumes and it hasn't created any issues. It's spawned some discussions. Obviously don't be too generic or too crazy.

Have it, recommend it. Most of my interviews at least briefly involve my interests section - some are completely dominated by it.

I have general (a few sports), specific (something extremely specific to me), specific (notable TV show that probably every lawyer ever has watched). Nothing has come up in an interview yet, but really it's not one of things that hurts you. A lot of people, for example, just end up talking about sports for their interviews, or so I've heard.

How long ago was your CB? I've been waiting four weeks. CB was at the Palo Alto office.

Every interview ive been on, this has come one and even dings saying they dont hire 1Ls, have mentioned something that they have in common.

One interview, literally, just talked about the job for 5 mins, they didn't ask about my background at all, just about my interests. Be interesting to see what happens with this
