I never had a car in New York, but I lived near the Holland Tunnel for a little while, so I saw the traffic every day. A car will be more trouble than it's worth. While the traffic won't be as bad with a reverse commute, it will still probably suck. Plus you have to worry about parking on both ends, gas, maintenance, etc, and you won't be able to get any work done in your car. Since your office on the NJ side is close to public transit, I'd go that route.

You may be able to get a car service home that way, too, if you work past a certain time. Check your employer's benefits/overtime policies.
