also, this is incorrect - one of the firms I have an offer from said they weren't going to do a background check until I disclosed, and that they only wanted to do one then to corroborate my disclosure and make sure that I wasn't withholding information.

I think you should be proactive if they're going to find out, and tell them. I don't know happened, but with drinking - lots of people make this mistake and don't get caught for it. I'd explain the circumstances - did you just not have a place to drink with your friends? Were you addicted to drinking? What have you done to make sure this isn't a concern in the future? I'd be proactive.
