I thought it was for a full time position bc that's what was advertised, posted salary and all. Instead, I got a generous "offer" to work nearly full time for free. I say nearly full time because the interviewer had to get on the computer the look up the exact number of hours they could get away with making me work without having to pay me or give health insurance (seriously those were the exact words, "hold on I need to check how much can I make you work without having to pay you or give you health insurance"). I won't even be considered for anything paying until after I have my bar results and even then my name is just "in the pool" of all the other "post-grad interns" (slaves) working for free hoping to get a job and the interviewer had no idea when an actual position might pop up. When I said I couldn't afford to work full time for free, I got told to go live with my parents. When I said they didn't live anywhere near the city, I got the side eye and a "well I really need people who are committed and passionate and aren't in this for the money."

I considered walking into oncoming traffic on my way out.

The person who interviewed you is a dickbag, and I am sorry you went through that shit.

Honestly you should consider tearing into this person and walking out of the interview (if something similar ever happens again). Call them unprofessional, tell them to their face that their perspective is a cancer and that you will be sharing it with your school's career services to help other students. Sure we are in a position of weakness and you don't want to "burn bridges" or whatever, but this person and people like them aren't even bridges. They are steaming heaps of garbage waste who do nothing positive for the profession or the world.

I hate that "true passion" bs

If your "true passion" is helping others bicker ab money I feel sorry for you

Sorry for your exp. anon

Well it was public interest so I kind of get where he's coming from on that point and trust me, the salary was posted it was nothing to brag about, but what he implied was that I was acting entitled when I expected to be paid anything for my work. He implied my full time work was worth absolutely nothing and somehow my inability to afford to work for free means I wasn't committed to the work (whereas I guess if I was a trust fund baby who could afford to work for free I would suddenly be "passionate" and "committed.") That's what made me rage.

No reason for you to feel like you should walk into traffic. Should have pushed that dickbag into oncoming traffic. Wanting to eat and pay rent doesn't mean you aren't passionate or committed.

I don't get where he's coming from

It's one thing to be like " hey we don't have $ but we love you and if you pass bar there will be a full time position waiting for you or if not I'll make calls on your behalf"

That would be risky and not ideal but if I were that guy that's how id maybe handle

This behavior is just straight up exploitation

Have two second-round interviews scheduled for next week now. Half-excited, half-unenthused. The places I really want to work at (AGs office, local government offices, appellate office of the PD) either are really slow at getting back to me or are uninterested in my shit, and the places I've gotten interviews with I applied to as back-ups. But a jerb is a jerb.

Also the interview that prompted the "have you ever left an interview wanting to suicide if you have to work for that office?" didn't invite me back, so apparently they felt the same way.  They asked me my feelings on the death penalty (to which I almost just said "should I just leave right now?"), grilled me about my librul resume, gave me two roleplays with unresponsive victims and witnesses, and kept adjusting their hypo and making me give another answer until eventually I made an ethics violation.

GOOD LUCK, DIQUE

So I got a call on May 8th from a judicial assistant. She said the judge received my resume and wanted to interview me, and she was just calling to see if I was still interested in interviewing since several months had passed since I had mailed in my app. I said yes, and then she said I would be called within the next 10 days to schedule the interview once she knew when the judge wanted to do the interviews. It's now May 24, and I haven't heard yet. It seems like the chambers moves pretty slow, and I know you aren't ever supposed to call chambers about your app. Should I just keep waiting or should I risk it and call?

sorry to hear it. don't know what to say.

sucks immensely, but if you eventually get something steady, even if it sucks, your foot will be in the door and it will never be quite this hard again. keep trying.

I would email or call the assistant and ask. People are busy and she might have just forgotten.

is this bullshit normal

The U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado is seeking an unpaid Pro Bono Law Clerk to U.S. District Judge Raymond P. Moore. In this position the selected applicant will assume duties traditionally performed by federal court law clerks. The selected applicant will be asked to make an aspirational commitment to the position for a period of 6-12 months with a negotiable start date, but no later than September 2, 2014. Preference may be given to those applicants who can start earlier. Applications submitted after the closing date will not be considered.

yeah, i mean you expect that kind of thing from douchebag corporations and some non-profit PI shit, but not from a federal district court. seems super fucked up. the ad goes on to say that prior legal experience is highly preferred. i am sure the guy will get like 100 apps, too.

Sadly not surprising given that there are year-long unpaid SAUSA positions.
