Overview

HIAS Pennsylvania’s Mission: Driven by the Jewish value of welcoming the stranger, HIAS (the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) PA provides legal, resettlement and supportive services to immigrants and refugees from all backgrounds in order to assure their fair treatment and full integration into American society.

HIAS Pennsylvania is recognized by the Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR) of the Department of Justice as a voluntary agency permitted to host immigration specialists known as accredited representatives who can provide immigration legal services. HIAS Pennsylvania is one of the largest non-profit immigration legal service providers in Pennsylvania. With a current staff of 7 attorneys and 4 accredited representatives, the organization assists low income immigrants with adjustment of status, removal defense, family unification, citizenship, and asylum. HIAS Pennsylvania prioritizes providing services to vulnerable populations including survivors of interpersonal violence and unaccompanied and abused youth.

HIAS Pennsylvania’s Immigrant Youth Advocacy Project was developed 8 years ago to provide legal services to immigrant youth in Eastern Pennsylvania and is the only agency in Pennsylvania with a staff attorney solely dedicated to this work. Because of the increased number of unaccompanied youth entering the United States, largely from Central America, the Office of Refugee Resettlement has contracted with KidsPeace in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to provide shelter to up to 72 youth who are apprehended at the border. We seek an Immigrant Youth Know Your Rights (KYR) Coordinator to provide services to youth at KidsPeace. The KYR Coordinator will report to the immigrant youth staff attorney.

Salary: This is a non-exempt position; salary is commensurate with that of those in similar accredited representative/immigration specialist positions.

Summary of Responsibilities:

The KYR Coordinator will be expected to keep detailed and clear records of each case, write up the assessments with the assistance of HIAS Pennsylvania attorneys and track referrals and monitor case outcomes. The KYR coordinator must adhere to any data collection requirements of the funder.

First off, I want to say that over the entire last year, through all of 3L, through graduation, through bar study, through my post bar intern position and still awaiting CA bar results, this thread has been so invaluable for everything it offers.
Second, from that, I am leaving the vale. Got an offer at an international tax firm (a job I absolutely wanted and am excited about) in a major metro area in my dream city, where I wanted to live/work/be so bad that I turned down my only other offer back in March that was in an area I did not want to be. I can't believe it and it still hasn't set in. I also can't believe this all happened for so long and at the point where I would have taken peanuts to work somewhere doing some area I hated, I was offered this which is something that I almost put under my ideal situation.
Best of luck to everyone in the vale and best of luck on those still awaiting bar results.

Various Symplicities in the area, craigslist, goinhouse, simply hired, county state jobs section, usajobs, firm website's openings page, and maybe a few other sources I am not remembering but used. I started applying the day after I took the bar and have been going since. I'm not quite at a point where I am gonna go the mass-mail route yet because I am still finding some listings, still doing informational interviews and have a few contacts looking for me (as well as a handful of TLS posters who have PMed me :)) but in about a month or so I may just start blanketing the entire market if I don't have anything by then. Nothing to lose.

Thanks to all! It still hasn't quite sunk in yet. While I didn't post in this thread all too often, I read it all the time, if nothing more than to have some sort of commiseration connection and frustration with others going through the same thing.

Oh man I just had the CRAZIEST DAY TODAY...

Job I applied to in September at a boutique firm in CA all the way in a region that I don't care to live (think Sacramento/Riverside) rejected me today. Had a phone interview with them back in beginning of October. I was super interested in them because the firm's practice area is the exact kind of law I want to get involved in; its super niche, its growing, its lucrative, and it definitely has exit options into big law, in-house, etc. due to its niche. After the interview, the partner looked me up on linkedin, emailed me a week later asking for a reference contact, and was willing to wait another 2 weeks to speak to the reference because the reference was out of town. I finally get the email today (2 weeks after the partner spoke to my reference) of the rejection. I was crushed.

Another job I applied to in September for another boutique firm, but not the niche I want. I got a callback in October for this firm, where I was dropped bar hypos on. I didn't do so hot on the bar hypos, and received a rejection letter from the firm that still left the door open (btw, shortly after I received this email, I received the email from the partner at the other firm asking for references). I was crushed after rejection, because I swore I did well enough in the first interview to overlook the callback performance.

Well, today, after I got my rejection letter, I received a missed call and voicemail from the hypo firm. They still were interested, and well...

I'M LEAVING THE VALE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Want to say thanks to all you bros (and gals) here who have been extremely supportive. This thread gave me so much support and encouragement, whether direct or indirect. So I want to give something back, even if its not much. Here's my story without outing myself too much.

I graduated from a bay area law school in the fall. Took the Feb bar, and passed the first time. Moved to SoCal right after the bar. Started hustling immediately for a clerkship before bar results in May, found a clerkship with a solo in civil lit right before bar results. Got two interviews over the summer, and that was it. September came, I pushed out a tremendous amount of apps over craigslist, indeed, BYU, symplicity, etc., and actually got 10 interviews in September-October: 3 of actual worth (the two mentioned above), 1 recruiter, 1 non-law job (which i declined even though lucrative), 2 in house gigs for small companies (both were terrible jobs due to no substantive legal work and/or ethical issues), 1 insurance defense biglaw gig (absolutely terrible, billable hours were 2200-2400 and pay was 50-60k), a solo (40k and had no idea what he was doing with his practice) and a small firm that didnt work out on both ends.

It was a crushing month, getting defeated after call backs or interviews, and it was even tougher going into work and working hard after each defeat. But each interview made me stronger, and each mistake I made I learned from. I also learned how to polish my resume and think on my feet during interviews. And I also learned that there is hope out there as long as you keep hustling. Everyone's luck is different, but you can't give up. I floated out hundreds of apps, received hundreds of rejections. You can't give up, no matter how shitty things are. You just gotta keep on keepin on. You guys (and gals) are so bright and talented, its gonna work out so long as you guys don't give up. If I could find employment as an attorney following graduation, you guys definitely will.

Will be around, if I can help PM me and I'll do what I can.

What's crushing me is that I'm doing all that, and I'm going nowhere fast. A large chunk of it is there's not a ton of jerbs in Denver/Colorado. Sigh...

However, bros through the bar are helpful here.

Moral of the story for all you valers: Keep emailing. I received tons of polite rejection email responses, but it only takes one with a sudden hiring need to say yes!
do law firms hire jds as paralegals? how many attorneys is the mid law?

I go and meet with the founding partner for the interview, she loves me, and hires me immediately! After being in and partially out of the vale, I'm finally really out!

Moral of the story for all you valers: Keep emailing. I received tons of polite rejection email responses, but it only takes one with a sudden hiring need to say yes!
Congrats brother, awesome news

This makes the $10k /yr Boston College job seem reasonable.

This is my experience right now too. A whole lot of silence where I've always gotten at least a "thanks but no thanks" in the past. And our symplicity is full of out of state positions, which is helpful since obviously we took ALL those bar exams and not KY. D'oh.
My symplicity has like 15 volunteer and 1 contract positions asking for 3Ls and recent grads. Fucking vultures.

This. ALL volunteer crap. Oh, except for the two small law associate positions at $30k. Yeah. THIRTY.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
