The last day of my unpaid government internship is tomorrow. They have been under a hiring freeze for 3 years now, and are being furloughed because of the sequester. Even when people quit, they are not hiring replacements. Our IT person quit a few months ago, so we no longer have IT people in the office. The computer-savvy lawyers no have to try and fix our problems--either that or we have to conference call with an IT guy from a different city and explain to him over the phone what's on the screen and type stuff in ourselves.

Between my three unpaid government internships, I now have 9 months of government work under my belt with no pay.

I think that should count towards my IBR. If I get a paid government/PI job, I should have 9 years, 3 months until loan forgiveness.

It's ironic, because the Feds are guaranteeing my loan debt. Fucking pay me or hire me, or else you're left holding the bill while I change my name to Juan and move to Peru.

Jerbless + have to pay $750+ for car repair because my AC parts broke when I got involved in a minor fender bender FTGE

Going back to the topic on email subjects, what's a good one to use when I want to check in with a contact? I just want to say hello and see how he's doing, no begging for jobs (at least not explicitly).

This. Seriously. If you haven't experienced it yet cause you're a rising 3L, get ready. At worst you're gonna get people directly asking you where you're working. At best you're gonna have people saying shit like "Man, I'm glad I get to relax now cause (insert biglaw firm name) is gonna work me next year. Good thing they are paying me DAT 160K". I actually know a person who, in a 3L facebook status wrote something to the tune of "Everytime I get sad because I didnt get an A in one of my classes I remind myself that getting a job was my most important class, and I got an A++ in that." Seriously, I don't think I have ever been as heated about a FB status as that. We had more than a few people who simply lacked the social skills to understand what the majority of their classmates are going through and just SHUT THE FUCK UP. There is one kid who posts daily updates about his new job on FB right now.

That is hilarious. I have a friend who goes to Pepperdine and I wish I could send that to him right now.

This. One of my employed "friends" from law school was busting my balls on FB about how I was still unemployed (even though I am not- he just thinks I am because guess what? I don't post that shit on facebook because I know that like 90% of my classmates are still jobless). Fuck that guy.

God. No wonder people hate attorneys. Even LS aside, a shit ton of people are hurting right now. The "new normal" is sucktastic for pretty much every walk of life.

I added you, but with no photo I'm not sure how you think employers can decide whether you're worth interviewing or not.

I can't even comprehend what kind of person would do that to another human. What would motivate that, other than pure sociopathy?

Talked with Career Services today. "A lot more jobs will open up after bar results."

Are they just saying this to make you feel better or is there any truth to this? Right now, there are just no jobs whether you are licensed or not. I can't see that changing all of a sudden once bar results are released.

This x 1000. Logically this makes no sense to me. I get that employers might be more WILLING to hir when results are out, but the # of postings and jobs from now to then wont magically increase.

I don't think any photos exist of me wearing a suit or something similarly professional. I will have a modeling session this weekend with my webcam.

I think this is a good point, but I have also heard a lot of anecdotal evidence suggesting that there is another hiring spike once you pass the bar and are licenced.

Not all job opportunities are posted on job boards. I hate to sound cliche, but there are a decent amount that come up through networking, etc. Smaller firms can't wait around for 3 months to make sure you passed the bar. It just doesn't make sense to take that risk when they could either 1) hire someone with 1-2 years of experience instead, or 2) just wait until November and then start hiring.

But won't there be more jobs, not as an absolute number but as a percentage that you are eligible for? I see postings now fairly often that say "must be licensed at time of application."

But he's only been there a year.

Should I email the partner that was supposed to be in that time slot and ask if he has a little bit of time to speak with me on the phone or something?

Quoting this because I didn't get any responses....

Was this a screener?
Maybe contact recruiting to see if they want to reschedule.

It was OCI... So, yeah, pretty much a screener.

Edit: they don't have "recruiting," they are only about 18 attorneys.

Update: I sent the email yesterday evening. Got a call about 10 am from the partner that wasn't in the interview. Said the associate had good things to say about me, and we had a sort of screener over the phone. Should know about callbacks in 2 weeks. Sounds like a fun firm, and you really get to hit the ground running.

Technically I wasn't even supposed to receive an offer form the place I'm at now because I'm not licensed and they really needed a licensed attorney. I got lucky because my interviewing partner really liked me and is close friends with a professional associate of mine who gave me glowing reviews. Interviewing partner convinced the other partners to hire me. So, I definitely think more doors will open for you, and others, after bar results come out.
