Overly effusive thanks

Postby Anonymous User » Thu Aug 30, 2012 9:39 pm

So.... had my greatest of greatest series of CB interviews today. Love the firm and the people so much! It would be my favorite place to work, times 1000.

Felt like I had good to great rapport with every interviewer, and with many of them I had wide-ranging conversations that touched upon all sorts of things, including the firm & the practice of law in general & the city & judges & music & writing & whatever else. Such friendly and genuine people. Tried to emphasize everything I loved about the firm whenever I could. I had a great feeling about it from the get-go (best screener!), and the more I did my homework, the more I liked it. That affection only increased 10x when I started to meet all of the spectacular people.

So of course, it's me, and post-interview, pre-flight home, I write a rushed thank you email to the recruiter (which is definitely customary in the region). And it somehow turns into this 900-word paean to everything I love about the firm (which happens to be everything the firm loves about itself, luckily) and how much I liked all of the people etc. And I'm feeling so great after the interview that I just send it without really thinking two thoughts about it. Worse yet, it has a few non-deadly but noticeable typos.

So... I don't know. I feel like it could *just maybe* help me, because my sincerity and enthusiasm is so palpable. But probably not. And this post will surely out me to anyone who cares and reads this, but that is a small (if not non-existent) number of people, and anyways, I have nothing but the very nicest things to say about everyone involved. Such a great place!

But it probably won't (help, I mean), and now I'm slightly stressed/perplexed. And that's really it--I just had to vent! Really really really hope it didn't sink the ship.

Depends on the place. My firm/office (small V100 office) would eat that stuff up, but I can imagine places where that swings your chances in the other direction.

Don't worry about it. Like you said, you felt like you did your best and they liked you. Unless they are glaring typos, its highly unlikely they will be noticed. I am willing to bet you are reading the thing over and over, analyzing every line for errors. They will read through it once.

If I were a recruiter, my reaction would be either a) that's very sweet or b) this person needs to be evaluated for a mood disorder ( email sounds sort of manic...)

Yeah, 900 is just a guess, actually, but it was really long! There were, however, a variety of words, instead of just three. Also, many of them were one to two letter articles. In addition, there were paragraphs indicating a reasonably coherent structure to my thoughts of gratitude.

It was definitely over-the-top, but pretty well-written if I don't say so myself. Sincere gratitude radiates from the page. It's like I was in creative-writing class all over again except instead of short-stories we were covering the "business correspondence" genre.

Okay, for a serious answer:

I think you should feel exactly how you are feeling. If you get rejected I doubt this was the reason, but I don't think you should feel good about it at all.

So, I would accept the fact that you did something very mildly stupid, but then go relax and have a beer.

or c) should be more concise. IMPORTANT SKILLZ 4 LAWYERZ

OP, I've been in a similar situation, only I was drunk and I didn't like the firm very much. The damage is done. The best you can do is hope that they went with option A, liked it, and didn't notice your typos. Good luck, hope you get the job.

Eh, yeah, you might be right. It was more of a "vent" thread and less of an "advice" thread, since constructive courses of actions regarding this particular matter (if needed at all) are simply unavailable. Still, the plan you outline is not without its advantages.

But. Now that I ponder past interactions, actually this recruiter (the best recruiter of them all, I think) has been particularly responsive to (shorter) extremely gracious TY-type messages regarding other things she has helped me with. Like I said, they are really Nice with a capital "N." I notice this in particular because I tend to send out a lot of gratitude (Thanks, BTW). And I'm a true believer, and I'm pretty sure at the very least, my true-believer-ness emanates from the message. So I'm thinking it's a positive, sans dumb (but barely noticeable) typos. Or a nothing.

This. Be yourself. If they don't like you, you'd be miserable working with them.

Was the email to the hiring partner or the recruiting staff? If the latter, it can't really hurt since they're not making the decision. If the former, then you're kind of like the overly-attached law student who wants to get married after the first date.

I had a callback yesterday. Went great but felt I could have done more to impress one majorly important partner, so I emailed to thank him and say "would love to talk more about x, by the way here's some new case I found on westlaw, let me show off by telling you about it as though you wouldn't already know if it was important." Not 900 words but felt pretty dumb afterwards. Offer first thing this morning. HTH

Yes. Approximately. I believe I relayed this information (A) in the OP and (B) a few posts down. Ask yourself--was this a comment worth posting twice? After you answer that question (the answer I think, is obvious), ask yourself another, stupider question: was spelling out "nine-hundred" the second time maybe, just maybe, a waste of precious screen-space? That's t-w-e-l-v-e characters dude. Oh by the way: Thanks!

Seriously, folks, approximately 900 words is not that long, especially if you're writing, say, an impressionistic multi-volume French novel, or perhaps, a routine thank-you email to a friendly recruiter.

The latter. While I know she is not the decider, she controls who gets the information and when, so she probably has more input than you might think. Loved the hiring partner. No TY letter set there. OCS (I know, I know) told us to send one to the recruiter, mentioning (at some point) the people you interviewed with. If the firm cares it will get acknowledged, if the firm really cares it might even get forwarded to your interviewers.

Also, I think with most firms, your observation regarding the hiring partner would be right, but not this one. It's a strange place in really good ways. Everyone is lovely, down-to-earth, and wants to marry early to get that dowry.

So, yeah, many of the 900 words are basically "please thank Frederick Douglass, George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington, Harriet Tubman, W.E.B. DuBois," with more eloquence and fewer fallen fallen civil rights heroes.
