How good is Cahill
doesn't get love in vault or other prestige rankings, or among law students generally...but has good compensation and places well on league tables. have an offer trying to get some sense of what i may lose in exit options if i choose them over a V20/V30

Cahill is kinda like Fordham (which is fitting since it's a huge Fordham firm)...a lot of love in New York, but not a ton of respect outside of the city.
If you want to work the same hours as a Cravath associate, but make 20-30k more as a first year, go to Cahill.

If you're looking for a guaranteed offer, go to Cahill. We didn't work much over the summer; sure, we had work assignments, but it was rare to stay in the office past 5:30. There were plenty of social events, and most everyone was super laid-back. Everyone got offers, despite some people not showing up to work on time, dicking around in their offices, etc.

Re: How good is Cahill
I'm not an associate there but I have met a lot of Cahill folks. Their being essentially a single-office firm (that isn't Cravath or WLRK) probably hurts their vault ranking because people outside of NY just don't know much about them. They're ranked 20th in New York though, which is more accurate. They're roughly on par with Milbank and Willkie in terms of prestige, and more prestigious than firms like Proskauer and Paul Hastings. Probably a better place to work than White & Case and Cadwalader. Depending on your personality, it could be the perfect place to work. They give you lots of independence and more responsibility earlier on than firms that have more structure.
I can't really speak to exit options but I imagine they're equal to other firms that work with big banks. They're definitely a well respected name. I would suggest you think about what practice area you might enjoy if you're deciding between offers. The v20-v100 New York firms are each good at different things. Work at Fried Frank if you want to do real estate. Or Milbank or Chadbourne if you want project finance, Proskauer if you want Labor and Employment, SRZ or SewKis if you want to do funds work, etc. If you want to do anything international or cross-border at all, then look elsewhere, such as White & Case, Shearman, etc.

so am i wrong with the impression i got of super type-a personalities and long hours? also, were you pigeonholed into lit/corp or did you get flexibility to move around?Anonymous User wrote:If you're looking for a guaranteed offer, go to Cahill. That poster was just talking about his summer experience. They definitely work you hard as an associate. Even with the free market system, the work will find you. It's just up to you to turn it down if you have too much.Anonymous User wrote:so am i wrong with the impression i got of super type-a personalities and long hours? also, were you pigeonholed into lit/corp or did you get flexibility to move around?Anonymous User wrote:If you're looking for a guaranteed offer, go to Cahill. I've met Cahill associates who still did both lit and corp assignments into their 2nd year. Most people stick with one thing much sooner than that, and are probably better off for it. But they don't force you into a group, pretty much ever.

I liked most of the attorneys that I met at Cahill on my CB. That said, one junior associate was incredibly awkward and borderline rude. His whole mission was to end the interview as early as possible because he had work to do. Lawyers are busy, yes, but don't volunteer to do something if you don't have time to do it.
Just anecdotal.
They are definitely very proud of their free market system. This is perfect for some people, but not so great for others.

Shouldn't let one bad apple ruin the whole bunch, but I had a very similar experience at a different firm and let it get to me. I had a horrible interview with a senior partner from a top top firm who was just a flat out dick to me. It was so bad/borderline unacceptable things to say in an interview, I went along with it figuring he was testing me. I spoke to a 3L who had just summered there in that partner's group, and it turns out it wasn't a test..the guy is just a giant ass. I ended up getting an offer, but I left so turned off to the firm I wrote them off the second I got out of that interview.Anonymous User wrote:yeah i have no idea what was with that. i thought they were throwing me a curveball but then it just seemed sad by the end. definitely left me with a bad taste.Anonymous User wrote:Yep
Don't understand how recruiting doesn't do a better job of screening out interviewers. The firm I ended up at is very meticulous in determining who gets to conduct interviews.

Re: How good is Cahill
Recently went on a callback and accepted their offer. I have had contact with a lot of people at the firm (partners/associates), they were all super nice, but still had that NY feel to them (I consider that a positive). The firm actually has great exit options as I have spoken with former associates who booked after 3 years to great jobs elsewhere. If you make partner, you are in for a massive payday as their PPP is of the highest in NYC. I feel the firm is massively underrated considering their vault ranking. They are a relatively small firm considering the big boys they do business with, but still manage to dominate corporate finance/capital markets. The firm is quite healthy with 300 lawyers, 68 of which are partner. They have been doing the same thing forever and don't try to outgrow themselves as we have seen some other firms do in the past.

Yes, I was just talking about my summer experience. There are definitely some type-A personalities and long hours, but you're going to get that anywhere. On the whole, the people in the firm are relaxed and not douchey. And yes, you can still do lit/corp work when you start there, but it's probably best to pick one as soon as you know for sure what you want to do.Anonymous User wrote:so am i wrong with the impression i got of super type-a personalities and long hours? also, were you pigeonholed into lit/corp or did you get flexibility to move around?Anonymous User wrote:If you're looking for a guaranteed offer, go to Cahill. What was the turnaround time between your CB & your offer?

Re: How good is Cahill
New anon here with an offer. I am pretty sure their hiring committee meets on Friday (received an offer today, CB was on Friday).
With regards to the above comment about having to interview with disinterested associates, I don't think this is entirely the fault of the associate. This year's recruiting process is completely different from last year's because all schools have moved up their OCIs and firms are under a lot of pressure to make CB's and offers within a very short time span this year. August has traditionally been a slow month in the legal industry, and a lot of attorneys like to take vacations in August - especially partners. If a junior associate is called at the last minute by the recruiting department to sub-in for a partner that has just gone on vacation, I doubt that associate would be feel comfortable with saying hmm no thanks. Partners care a lot about hiring, so as an associate, you should try to feign interest as well - even if interviewing a candidate would be inconvenient for you.
Regardless, I absolutely agree that interviewing with disinterested partners/associates sucks balls. It is damn near impossible to keep an interview going smoothly in these types of situations.

I've heard from a number of different people that the firm is not doing too well right now.

That's doubtful. They had over 40 SAs last year and plan to have the same amount this year. They just paid mid-year bonuses last month, just like they did the previous 2 years. They've been in the top 10 for PPP and RPL for many years. Markets aren't slowing down at all either.Anonymous User wrote:I've heard from a number of different people that the firm is not doing too well right now.

I heard that the bonuses (and number of summer associates) were, in part, to keep up appearances and that their bottom line is hurting. I wouldn't say anything except I've heard this from a number of different, reliable sources.Anonymous User wrote:That's doubtful.
