Transfers OCI 2012 edition

Postby happy-go-lucky » Thu Aug 23, 2012 2:31 pm

Folks, as much as we wish we could be considered the same as students in our new school, we probably aren't. Let's keep each other updated on how OCI is going for us. Maybe it will scare some 0Ls who are planning on going to lower school and transferring after 1L. (I know there's a thread in the transfer forum, but I think having the option of being anonymous will encourage more posting)

Format:
[1] Firm name -- office/region
[2] Callback/Ding -- format (phone, email, snail mail)
[3] Old School Ranking Range -- Rank/GPA -- journals
[4] New School Ranking Range
[5] Whether screener was from OCI or a job fair

I'll just post all my info at once.

Original school: T30 - top 10%, secondary journal
New school: CCN
Screeners: 25 (all lottery)
CBs thus far: 8 (Plus I got a call from a firm in my old market inviting me to come interview at their office because they liked my mock interview, so technically 9).
Dings thus far: 5-6 (I forget, only 1-2 of which I actually wanted/aren't ridiculous competitive).

But as I've said in the transfer forum, don't come to law school banking on transferring.

Not sure what happened but looks pretty clearly like I'm striking out.

seems like lottery screeners are not transfer-friendly. i almost prefer some type of pre-selects so that i'm not completely wasting my time at oci with firms that apparently don't want me.

I will agree that lottery is harder. I definitely feel that a fair amount of my screeners were wasted with employers that wanted top 10% new school students. However I don't think it's fair to say that lottery screeners are inherently not transfer-friendly. I just think the interview counts more as a transfer. At my old school, I would've had a possible lock on 3-4 firms based on my grades. Here I really don't.

I'm the T30 to CCN poster from above.

As a Class of 2013 Transfer, it seemed from our OCI thread last year that CCN (especially UChicago) and up transfers killed it at OCI. Looks like that is turning out to be the same case here.

Hm, maybe my new school (T14) just sucks, because all the fellow transfers I've been talking to are hearing nothing but silence & dings from OCI. You guys are clearly rocking it. Maybe we had all overbid for OCI...

I think I had some overbidding issues as well as some new region issues that worked against me. Tough not overvaluing yourself

Old School T-30 top 5%
New School T10
Lottery Screeners - 22
CB's - 0
Dings - 16

I'm getting fucked hard right now. I have 2 CB's and 3 screeners set up with other firms that I mass-mailed. Hopefully something works out.

I'm not a terrible interviewer, I've done mock interviews and talked to my CSO and they couldn't find anything wrong with the way I was doing it. No connections and no WE surely didn't help.

Kinda wishing I would have just stayed at my old school where I would have very likely got a job.

Original school: T30 - top 10%, law review
New school: CCN
Screeners: 17
CBs thus far: 10 (cancelled 4 after I got an offer - substantial work experience)
Dings thus far: 3 (although fairly sure there are at least two others coming via mail)

Old School: T50, top 7%, law review
New School: CCN
Lottery Screeners: total of 30 (18 from regular lottery, 8 from add period, 4 from lottery/other adds)
CB's - 11
Dings - not really counting
Offers - 3 so far

Still have 3 more interviews to do, and at this rate, more offers will (hopefully) be coming in.

I couldn't be happier with everything. My firms range from V20-V100. Most of the V10 dinged me, but most other firms gave me a shot.

Original school: T20 - top 5%, LR
New school: HYS

OCI screeners: 16 (lottery)
OCI CBs thus far: 6

Job fair screeners: 30 (preselect)
Job fair CBs thus far: 20

lottery interviews definitely felt a lot tougher as a transfer, and i felt like i had to try harder to get off the "so why'd you transfer" line of questioning. encountered a lot more skepticism about (DC) ties, and seemed to be perceived as more of a flight risk.

I'm not feeling hopeful, but my fingers are crossed.

Original School: T20, Top 2%, law review
New School: CCN
Screeners: 20 (14 from lottery, 6 from add)
CBs thus far: Lost count as I didn't schedule them all, but definitely over 10
Dings thus far: 4+?

As for the conventional wisdom for 0Ls, yes, you should not go to a place you would regret going to if you graduated at median. However, if you did well at your previous school, and your previous school was a school that firms typically recruit from, you should expect to kick ass at OCI. (I'll also note here that had I stayed at my old school, it's possible I would have done even better because the preselect system would likely have yielded considerably more screeners; however, I didn't transfer only to participate in OCI.)

Old School: UCLA/USC/Vandy/UT
New School: HYS
Screeners: 19
Callbacks Invited: 11 (one or two more may trickle in, although unlikely to accept)
Callbacks Accepted: 6
Callbacks Completed: 4 (2 next week)
Offers: 3 (1 V5, 2 V20)

Old School: DCNG (not sure of rank, above median and maybe around top 1/3)
New School: CCN
Screeners: 27 + a bunch from job fairs
Callbacks Invited: 9 + 1 from job fair
Callbacks Accepted: all
Callbacks Completed: 2
Offers: 1 v50. perfect firm for me. accepting the offer and canceling my other CBs.

I bid super conservatively, with only 2 or 3 reaches. did about as good as I had hoped to do if I had stayed at my lower t14. Transferred purely for personal reasons and was just worried transferring would hurt me.

Old School: In the 60s-70s, top 10%
New School: USC/UCLA
Screeners: 15 (lottery)
Callbacks Invited: 7
Callbacks Accepted: 5
Callbacks Completed: 5
Offers: Just got one yesterday from a v25. I really love this firm and I am accepting! Going to inform my other CB firms later today. I'm kind of in shock I got a job from OCI but it certainly made me happy that I transferred.

(edited because I originally put my class ranking next to my new school instead of my old one!)

Gosh, I'm jealous.. but congratulations!

New School: USC/UCLA

Callbacks Completed: 1
Offers: 0

I got a callback from my #1 firm and think I screwed it up pretty hard, though still no response a week later. I felt for the most part I did fine during screeners, and most of the time my screeners were really upbeat/involved a lot of laughing and the interviewers seemed really enthusiastic about my responses. Haven't been able to get anything through mass mail.. kind of wishing I hadn't transferred.

Thanks :) Hopefully one of your CBs turns into an offer, too! You never know. Why do you think you messed up the call back?
