I know of at least two people who received invitations to interview with Judge Thomas.
When?
I don't know exactly, but before 1 pm Eastern time.

Anonymous User wrote:Alum here. Just wanted to throw a few encouraging words out here.

I applied from HYS for 2012-13 clerkships as a 3L, but unfortunately struck out. Two things I wanted to point out. First, even though the vast majority of calls/e-mails have indeed already gone out today, just bear in mind that some will still be coming in the next week or so. I got an interview offer from a CD Cal judge (that I was able to parlay into an interview with another CD Cal judge) the Monday after the first wave of calls. I also received an interview offer from a D Mass judge at the end of September.

Second, don't lose heart if you don't land a clerkship immediately. I was very distraught at not getting anything for 2012-13, but I reapplied for 2013-14 clerkships as an alum and was extremely fortunate to land a district court clerkship in an extremely competitive east coast market. Just be persistent.
What do you recommend to do to be "persistent?"
By persistent, I mean don't give up if you don't nab a clerkship for the term you want. Like everyone else, I really wanted a good clerkship for the year right after I graduated, but that just wasn't in the cards. So I worked hard during my 3L fall (much to my chagrin), made pretty good grades, and sent out more applications in March, April, and May of 2012. Thankfully, I landed an awesome clerkship for 2013-14, and I even had to turn down a few other offers afterwards. Applying as an alum is definitely easier than doing so on the "Plan."
Where did you work in 2012-2013?
NYC V5 firm.

Parlay calls are when you get an interview with a judge in a city (preferably not your own) and call other judges in the same courthouse (or maybe nearby cities too) that you applied to and say that you got an interview with one judge in that courthouse and were wondering if the judge had any openings that day. At the very least, you will find out that the judge already hired or you will at least call attention to your application. It worked for me when I called the chambers of a judge where I had strong local ties.

Is there any way to parlay without a first interview? I live in the city where I did most of my applications, is there any way to turn "I'm just next door, do you have any extra interview spots?" into something that doesn't sound pathetic and that might actually work?

He hired a rising 3L two weeks ago, despite being purportedly on-plan.

Would you by any chance feel comfortable letting me know which schools those two people went to? Thanks for the info.

Does that mean he's done, or is there another position open?

I might be the most hail mary candidate on this thread but my theory is, if you don't play, you can't win. And besides hours of my life spent uploading docs to OSCAR (and a few sheets of resume paper), it didn't cost me a dime.

Got a call from EDPa at noon on the dot. Hung up the phone and ran around in circles. This can't be my life.

A fellow LRer just got a call and an offer for D.Ct. (no interview) at 656. Combined with the Cali offer above, it makes it difficult to call it a day and go have a few rounds.

Judicial Yellow Book - your school library should have it in print or have online access for it.

Anonymous User wrote:I know a few alums whose clerkship cycle started as far back as May, so I figure I'll save some of you the stress and tell you which courts I know for a fact were heavy on the alum hires or have hired so far in advance that they are not entertaining applications from people who aren't up for clerking 2+ years from now:

5th Cir.
6th Cir.
EDPA
7th Cir.
M.D. Fla.
M.D. Tenn.
EDVA
3rd Cir.
SDNY
EDNY
D. Conn.

I hope this helps 2Ls/3Ls not feel too bad. Many positions are filled even before the official clerkship season begins, so not hearing from anyone isn't always a reflection on your merits.
I would add that the majority of the 4th Cir. hired long before the plan this year, two out of the three Boston 1st Cir judges were interviewing alums in June of this year, and much of the 10th Cir hired in June/July this year.

Applying as graduate (May 2012)
School: T50-ish
Rank: top 15%
L. Rev.: secondary, board
Applied to E.D. Tex., N.D. Tex., and D. Nev.

Got a call for interview from Judge Michael Schneider (E.D. Tex., Tyler) around 5:30 p.m. CDT.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
