Pre-selects come out tomorrow post here, worried that OCI will be a bust. Share your thoughts.

Can any 3Ls speak to average number of pre-selects last year?

So-so Virginia ties, but top third w/ secondary and nada, your stats?
I thought OCI would be rough, but after the rankings fall maybe the firms actually did take notice and reduced interview slots. Unreal that massmail is more useful than OCI, wondering if I should even bid for the next few sessions or will LR/top 10% just hog all the spots.

Top 20% with secondary. Guess it is 10% or bust... Have you gotten anything from mailing? I've probably sent out 100+ apps so far and just waiting now.

Anon from above, only success of massmail is outside of VA, don't want to name secondary market.

So far no one has gotten anything? I know its not a matter of bids not being up as they say not invited. Come please post if you got something, someone on TLS had to have gotten something. Curious how many slots the firms actually had.

Rising 3L. Unfortunately, the way our OCI works is that there is no lottery. Lottery is typically for T14 schools where there is little distinction between students (everyone coming from U Chicago should be a good fit for a firm unless they're the absolute bottom of the class). When employers have the option of choosing students to interview, often times they choose the highest GPAs, those on law review/moot court, and those with spectacular qualifications/prior work for their related fields).

Think, probably 100+ students apply to each firm. There are only 14 spots. The math is not on a student's side.

Last year, I (and most of my friends) got less than 5 interviews through OCI. This is for those in top 35% last year. Massmail firms and really work your contacts. I know A LOT of students that got jobs because their _____ knew the ______ of some firm. Hopefully some of you are doing off-campus interview fairs. I know that lots of people that got jobs through those.

My experience from last year: bidding for only large firms in the mid-Atlantic region, I saw a lot of the same people interviewing with the different firms I successfully bid with. They were at the top of the class. I remember that there were non-top-10% students who were interviewing with these firms but had other credentials to make them stand out.

Firms were interviewing about five to fifteen students last year. If firms are doing OCI again this year, they are probably interviewing the same amount -- the real question is going to be if they are going to actually hire any summers from those interviews.

I don't think I heard of a resume forward actually leading to even an interview for anyone. Do them, because it's worth a shot, but don't expect much. I do recall students getting interviews (and summer jobs) by soliciting interviews outside of OCI.

e: FYI, different anon from above

So the off campus fairs are useful and not merely courtesy interviews, thats good to hear! Yea pretty thankful I've massmailed and networked w/ so many firms now that OCI results are coming back. I guess the TLS mentality of T-14 or bust is really true, so outside of T-14 OCI is just gravy and not a mainstay of the job search process.

I know several people who got interviews, callbacks, and offers from various fairs (particularly thinking of W&M's Northeastern fair). I think the fairs may be hit or miss though. Like the other anon poster said, it really depends if firms are truly looking to extend offers out to people.

outside top 20%, 2 big law interviews (DC, Richmond), 2 big law alternates (DC, Richmond), no ties to VA, I feel pretty fortunate (first round)

Outside of top 20%/secondary with one interview, but massmail has fared way better than OCI stuff. Getting interviews outside of top 10% is much more likely if you have to put in effort, b/c here all top 10% has to do is hit submit and show up on campus for a 20min interview. Gotta keep mailing firms until you get a job. Its rough for sure when a lot of firms only have 10-15 slots they'll just pick the highest grades and move on.
