What is the normal routine when a firm gives a permanent offer? Is it jus an oral offer, or is there some contract to the effect?

Does it depend if the firm is a NALP firm?

Most legal employment is at will unless you are a contract attorney.

For big law, you'll usually get a formal offer letter and some request to sign paperwork, despite the at will arrangement.

Generally, you'll hear about the offer orally first (either in person or over the phone) and then the firm will send you a written letter with some basic information (salary, how long it's held open for, practice group if applicable, etc.)
