Congratulations!

Just for posterity's sake (assuming future generations of Hastings students check this thread), did you notice any major differences between the DA hiring and the biglaw hiring processes? Was the callback significantly different? Was the timing any different?

I know I got a lot from reading last year's threads, so I figure it might be worth writing down for next year (if you don't mind).

I'll also admit to being curious...
Generally, DA will be much slower.

I had no callback interview, just requested references a few weeks after screening interview. However, I was under special circumstances, which I don't want to go too deeply into outside of PM.

You will most likely not even get your application reviewed until after biglaw has done callbacks and offers. Santa Clara DA has not even conducted their screening interviews yet.

Pay is much lower, or non-existent, but I am sure everyone knows that.

I got that, but it was a few days before they rejected me. I filled it out and was promptly rejected.

I know this sounds trite, but it really does take just one. You're highly ranked, just hang in there.

Pretty nice. A week after going to Cornell I got a callback interview. I went up to Rochester (Probably the best upstate market) and had a nice ~5 hour interview marathon. I'm cautiously optimistic. I think it went well but I'm also trying to be realistic. I find out in about 2 weeks if I get a summer associate position. At the very least it's nice to have callback experience for the future.

My antitrust professor is pretty unhappy I'm skipping his class for interviews/callback/sleep. He sent me an email today saying if I don't show up I'm out of the class. I'm also slightly disappointed Cornell lets transfers onto their journals. I can't legitimately tell employers I'm not on a journal because I'm a transfer, and, they make transfers do 2x as much footnotes.

San Francisco is amazing. There is no way around it. If Alameda County's PD office wasn't so cutthroat I would be tempted to move back after graduation.

Yeah, if I knew how much it helps in getting a firm job I would have probably majored in biology or chemistry. It's kind of like winning the lottery for science majors who go into law school on a whim.

I think you still need an advanced degree for bio or chem. EE appears to be the golden ticket.

One from OCI screener.
Two from resume collects.
Two from mass mailing firms randomly.

Mid sized firms are starting to respond. :)

i wish i had EE or didn't come to law school (mostly the latter since i could just be a patent agent at the pto, which i didn't know before coming to law school)

Seconded. B.S. in Bio here, it's not that useful. It'll get your foot in the door with some IP firms but they're really mostly looking for EE or CS, maybe Mech E. My success/failure rate with IP firms and non-IP firms is about equal.

I graduated from Hastings with much more than just a BS in EE and had difficulty getting an SA position. Hastings doesn't attract many employers from fields like patent prosecution. Plus, the Bay Area patent scene is different than the rest of the country (smaller firms/offices). I was basically on my own.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
