I think it sounds dumb to call yourself a "rising XL." It just sounds weird to me. Just say "I just finished my first year." At least say "rising second year." XL is slang, I think, and not appropriate for a cover letter.
On the other hand, thinking it is "pretentious" because it sounds like you're trying to play yourself up as a "rising star" is also very weird and dumb.
Finally, I can't find any reason it is "offensive," no matter how hard I scrape the bottom of the barrel of my mind. Just because something can be interpreted as sexual, doesn't make it offensive. Almost anything can be circuitously connected to something sexual, in a "6 degrees" kind of way.

No one has answered that question... except for people who say it's pretentious or wordy or could be (in a very extreme perverted mind) inferred as something sexual... yet none of these would deem it offensive unless you hold pretentious or wordy or somehow think this is sexual and if it can be inferred as sexual it is offensive to be offensive...
That sentence was quite messy... but you get my gist...
Rising senior... rising pay grades... rising sun... what's offensive? I am intrigued by the beliefs found in petty-minded people.
They appear to be interpreting it similar to "rising star."

Why are you mass mailing a retired partner anyway? Shouldn't this shit go to a recruiting lady who will know all the lingo?

Personal feelings on the word aside, these attorneys really can't figure out from context clues what it means? When hundreds of cover letters probably use the same wording?
I swear, the law students/attorneys I know are so often smart but with zero common sense.
