1L SA Positions...?

Post by Anonymous User » Fri Jul 20, 2012 1:19 am

I haven't been able to find any recent ruminations on the availability of 1L SA positions. Have they completely disappeared after the horrors of 2011? Are they more or less common in secondary markets? Are they typically only URM positions?

They exist; they're hard to get; roughly 20% of the HLS 1L class took a 1L SA this year. At many firms, they are specific to diversity slots or specific practice groups such as IP, but this is by no means the case everywhere. If you are a strong candidate otherwise it may be worth applying.

I applied to about 15 firms and had 6 screener interviews, 3 callbacks (despite below-median grades), and no offers. YMMV. Firms can be really selective and interview many people per offer given.

Be top of your class at an elite law school and you might have a chance.

You may also have better options if you target smaller secondary markets (where you have ties).

Top of the class at a top 20 LS got me a 1L SA at a V25 firm in NYC/DC. So it's not just for T6 or T14 law schools...

Being an outlier doesn't still change the truth of my statement. The only folks who can seriously consider themselves competitive for 1L SA at market paying firms are the top students at Harvard/Yale. Everyone else only has a prayer.

Very few people "randomly" get a 1L SA. I had multiple SA offers for market paying firms during 1L based on WE and other factors. If you don't stand out from the crowd, you're not going to get a 1L SA. You don't have to be at HYS though, most T14 place between 10-20% of their class in 1L SAs.

Multiple offers means there are more than one firm out there looking for something more than best grades from HYS.

Top grades from a lower T14 and URM. Didn't really count for much in my case.
