you guys are aware that there is a world outside of this site, right?

"zones of danger" and "buffers of plausible deniability" don't really mean much when the firm's identity is easily discoverable from other sites.

It's all about plausible deniability.

Can a member of the firm not find out via private message the same way everyone else is? Let's be honest here, that's not much of a solid buffer. It sounds like the same type of buffer that might have been used when "school X" recently mailed out every single admitted students' address, LSAT score, UGPA, and scholarship information to every single student in the entering class.

The buffer is better than nothing, the world is not perfect, move on.

Why not let the OP wait until she and her husband have finalized things with the firm in question, and, provided it does not violate any clauses of any outgoing paperwork he has to sign, out the firm following the completion of whatever hiring/dealing with this process the man has to go through?

At work and going to lunch at 11:40 at night? Where are you working?

Can someone who's online now tell me the firm via pm?

Not when you post anonymously.

Might it be okay to post the general vault range of the firm? That would at least reassure some people, hopefully.

Possibly somewhere in the Philippines where it's currently Friday and 1:30 pm.

Aside from empathy (and experience) what am I missing here? Aren’t people fired every day? Perhaps someone knowledgeable can walk us through a typical firing. What I mean by typical, is a firm on good financial footing firing someone (as opposed to the financial meltdown firm). Are there not company procedures, such as, warnings, negative reviews, etc.? Aren’t contracts involved? What about non-competes? Severance? What kind of recourse might be available to the terminated party?

The Vault ranking wouldn't reassure you.

It might be true that this woman's husband was fired, but I question the "fired for no reason" part. We really don't know enough. For all we know, he was not at work when he said he was, for example. Although I'm sure it was nothing like that.

It's too bad there's no way for there to be a temporary/recordless - and somehow unsearchable/ungoogleable - way for us to warn rising 2Ls about what the firm might be.

That would be very useful to them.

It would to the extent that my firm might be in a different (higher or lower) vault range than that firm, so at least I know it's not the same firm.

Close but no.

Also, I have PMed everyone who asked for the firm name. Again, these are just rumors; take it FWIW.

ETA: Apparently, the TLS filter stops my PMs, given the amount I recently sent. Please bear with me. I will respond as soon as my PM capability is enabled.

the firm in question is a festering TTT and has been for years. treats its associates horribly, low morale, highly leveraged, laid of even more then latham during the crash, and now apparently fires a 1st year. disgusting, especially when you know that right now that same firm has a small army of new summer associates eating $50 lunches everyday and waiting to fill the slots for next year.

kind of astounding actually. things must be really terrible for this firm to lay off a 1st year. you figure they've invested 200-300k into this guy (recruiting, callback, summer associate, benefits, support staff, office, salary, time wasted training, etc) and are now just throwing him away, not to mention the hit their reputation will take if these get out (like they are now) AND the hit to morale that is inevitable (imagine if you are another 1st year in the firm....how freaked out are you now?). if they're willing to throw a 200-300k investment away as well as damage their reputation and lower morale, to save on 1 associates salary, then things must be really terrible. this firm is very M&A heavy and seem to be inferior to its global competitors so not surprising if M&A is down 44% with nothing good on the horizon.

of course, this assumes he was laid off without cause, which could be complete bullshit.

Yes, rumors have been bad around this firm for some time. Let's see whether more news show up in relation to this. If they are really in difficult situations, more than one associate must have been terminated without cause, and news of this should surface. If only one associate has been terminated, then maybe just something did not click correctly between firm and associate, rather than an overall firm trend.
