Care to mention your stats or a close idea of them. I have been having a terrible time with mass mailing, even though I mass mailed throughout much of September and reiterated interest in October.

MVP top 1/3rd or so (idk about actual class rank); had an odd factor to my applications that may have resulted in my lack of success in OCI callbacks which was probably overcome in mass-mail callbacks because of timing
(I already outed myself to anyone who spoke to me about my firm choices so whatever lol)

When did you mass mail and what market are these CBs/offers from?

Both of these were mailed in the October 20s and CBs after recovery from Sandy. NYC, but also got a sniff from a top tier LA firm with a fairly tenuous connection to the partner I mailed.
You could probably just name the actual firms since you accepted an offer already; you're anonymous anyway

For my part if I didn't already mention it here, I turned down Mayer Brown (Chi) and Steptoe & Johnson (DC) a couple weeks ago (Early November) (and also canceled a CB at Neal Gerber (Chi) in late October; idk if any of them are still looking but worth a shot[/quote]

A friend of a friend just turned down NGE too

It would be pretty easy to be outted if I did that, but background wise, extensive work experience in BB Finance, 1/3 in T30.

Any tricks or did you just apply via HR? Any tips on scoring F500?

Yes I just applied through their careers website. I think the thing that really helped me was in my cover letter I made clear why I fit in with that company and specifically why I wanted them and not just any company and then elaborating on that in my interview. They made a comment in my interview about how my cover letter caught their attention because it seemed like I was passionate about their company and that I understood and was familiar with it.

A F500 company is going to hire 4-8 kids straight out of law school to work in-house as lawyers...

It's not common, but it does happen. While many companies have a pretty lean in-house group, others have sizable in-house groups comparable to mid-sized law firms. The latter will similarly sometimes have summer programs that lead to full-time positions.

It's weird that there was no sniff of anything like it at my T6 (assuming the company is not Alcoa.) I know plenty of students who would drop their biglaw offers to go inhouse.

Is three times too much? I mass mailed firms in September, reiterated interest in October, considering reiterating interest now...
Annoying and overkill or nothing to lose?

If you were one of those who got PM'd, I just got a call from the company (not sure if I can name it) and they are done hiring.

worst they can do is say no.

fwiw, i emailed a 3rd time to the same firm and ended up getting an interview. during the interview, she was joking about how many emails she gets regarding employment, and i brought up how many times i emailed. she had no recollection of the first two.

Finally got my first target-market callback at a mid-sized (for Des Moines) firm which as been my top choice firm since 1L year. I'm going over there on Tuesday, even though its two days before my first final. Any good tips? They said it would be between an hour and two hours, and that I would meet with as many lawyers as will be available during that time. I really wanna kill it, because this firm is exactly where I want to be this summer, barring any bad vibes at the callback.

I got my dark charcoal tailored suit, black cap toes, white shirt, and either red or blue pin dot tie (which one should I go with?) ready to go, so other than the tie any good advice?

Yeah. An e-mail would have sufficed.

Figure there's no point to be anonymous for this type of advice...

Red used to be a big NO in finance because of superstitions (losses), but was always traditionally OK for law. That said I did better on interviews where I went with blue/gold than red during recruiting season so YMMV.

A lot of people if they're not used to wearing dress clothes tend to be unnatural in them. Wear your suit around the house for a bit and practice your elevator pitch with a mirror to make sure that you have a good 1-2 minute blurb about yourself as an intro. Additionally make sure that you have 5-10 questions ready, and a plan on how to flow from one to another so you don't get into an awkward situation where you end up spouting off 3-4 questions in a row that are totally unrelated.

If you have any significant legal experience on your resume, prepare a 1-2 minute speech to summarize it and be ready for questions.

Don't tense up, stay relaxed, have a shot before going in if it will help you calm down. If you tend to get nerves, get to the building an hour early so the nerves have a shot to calm down before you go in, you can always find a coffee shop next door etc.

Make smalltalk with the receptionist while your waiting if you are personable and they aren't especially busy, having a good word put in for you by the front desk when HR comes to get you never hurts. Don't forget the staff, just because they aren't directly grading you, doesn't mean their bosses won't ask them about you. I heard one partner asking his secretary what she thought about me as I was walking to the next interview once.

Try to know something about everyone your meeting and their practice areas. People love to pat themselves on the back so if you can ask them about a significant part they played in a big case or deal, they'll feel more comfortable. Its even better if you have something in your background in common.

I'm sure you've heard most of this before, but law interviews aren't engineering or consulting or finance. Those all test your substantive knowledge, legal interviews only test your personality. It really is as much how well you fit with a firm as how well the firm's culture fits your personality. To put it in perspective, I always hit it off much better with corporate firms than IP Boutiques so even though I had an IP background, I really ended up bombing a lot of interviews with PhDs who were more academically inclined. Your going to be spending a ton of time with the people interviewing you if you accept an offer. Don't make your own life miserable by acting too much to fit in because you won't be able to keep it up day in day out once you really start working.
