Just got a response to my mass mail (which expressed my interest in a summer SA position) telling me that I can come in and meet with one of their summers from my school, get a tour, and maybe meet a couple other attorneys. What is this? Is it a sales pitch? Is it a screener? I'm really grateful for the opportunity but a little confused.

Question: Should I still send a letter/email to firms that have an online application system?

No. If they have an online system, use it or you'll piss off the recruiting department.

just out of curiosity are you in that town or traveling there already? or was there any mention of travel accommodations? I'm interested in mass mailing a smallish secondary market but it's pretty far from where i am now and I have no foreseeable plans to be there.

I'm already in the market, so no travel accommodations :( But I think mass mailing can't hurt; once you get your first bite you can update the other firms and let them know when you'll be in the market.

Last year there was a thread where people posted their mass mailing results. I propose we do the same here.

Applied to 30 NY firms at the end of last week. 0 responses.
Median at lower T14.

Top 20% at Fordham. Mailed 25 firms in a secondary with ties two weeks ago - just a rejection or two, and lots of "we aren't hiring yet"s.

Up to thirty firms so far. I have had one small firm tell me that theyll look at it when they have a chance and complete silence from the rest...

(Above median at school in the 40's w/ secondary journal).

Posted this before, but doesn't hurt to update.

T10, top third, mailed about ten firms in my home secondary market two weeks ago. Interview set up with one, haven't heard anything from the others.

If now is too early, when is appropriate? Don't job fairs and OCI start up in the next 2-4 weeks?

GULC, Top 33%.

Mass-mailed about 50 NY firms and 20 in my home state (midwest flyover).
1 interview offer (probably more screener than callback) in home state
Several offers from NY firms to set up screeners if OCI bids don't turn into interview slots
A few saying we'll get back to you in a few days/weeks.
Lots of just bid us for OCI.
60 no responses.

It's too early to expect much of a response. It's not too early to send in materials. At least for 2Ls, end of July is a good time to start getting on firms' radars.

This. I wouldn't expect responses for another week or two.

For those of us who apparently jumped the gun, then, should we check in with the recruiting contacts we haven't heard from in a week or so? If so, how? Say we're reaffirming our interest? Checking to confirm that they received our applications?

Or should we just wait and hope to hear back at some point?

I don't think we jumped the gun at all. I think waiting is our best bet.

Be patient. It was late August before I heard back from some of my mass mails last year, and I had never followed up after the initial email. Trust that big firms have a system for dealing with all this; they haven't forgotten you.

Top 1/3 CCN, mass mailed ~15 firms in market where I'm spending the summer. Just left first callback, have 3 screeners next week and a callback the week after. It's not too early.

When did you apply? How long did it take them to get back to you?
