Top Law Schools

If one is interested in eventually working in biglaw, is learning to golf a requirement? I ask because I know a large part of biglaw is if firms feel you can bring in business and a lot of business occurs on golf courses. If I'm a male should I eventually buy a set of clubs, take lessons, etc... or will no one care?

Is there even a golf course on manhattan?

Not knowing how to play may work in your favor. They may be happier when they win.

Lol obviously I know they aren't going to judge to offer someone a job or not on how well they play, but I'm wondering if being the guy who hit the ball 6 inches off the tee / lost 49 balls would be detrimental.

I'm going to say it won't matter. I haven't played golf with biglawlers... but I have played golf with some big time businessmen quite a few times with my SO's father. I'm not too good and generally it becomes more entertaining than embarrassing.

No one has ever seemed to care nor has it ever bothered any of them.

Depending on the firm, there might be a summer golf outing that SAs are supposed to attend. No one cares if you're bad -- just know the basic etiquette like not walking in front of someone's ball on the green.

It cant hurt to have a set of clubs and know how to play...you can solid used clubs for less than $100 and if you shop around you can get a cheap lesson or two and be reasonably competent to play on a course

I think I'm not going to worry about it too much, and buy a cheap set / take a couple lessons if I find out about any golfing type event.

You owe it to yourself to figure this out before you start working anywhere...

It gave an extra chance to talk to partners and senior associates during my SA because a group of us would go play 1-2 times a week during the summer, but if I hadn't played, it wouldn't have mattered. The whole firm "golf outing" had been hyped all summer and then the day of everyone but one partner and two associates begged off.

NY big law associate here.

Nobody plays golf. I can't think of a single associate who does on a remotely regular basis. A small handful of partners are into it, but they won't invite you to play.

It's not stupid if you don't know much about the culture of big law.

A lot of deal making is gone on the gulf course in non-striver fields.

From what I've heard, I think the golfing thing only applies to southern and west-coast firms. Not sure about D.C.

My Midwest, midlaw firm last year was *really* big on golf. It's a good, neutral topic to talk about that's slightly more interesting than the weather and slightly less contentious than the local sports team.

I have never played golf in my life. I'm so glad I'll be in New York this summer.

I'm in NY, and will be summering here, and while people talk about some immensely douchey things on a consistent basis, golf is never among them.
