I am a 3L.
About 10% of the associates at the firm I did 2LSA for are gone. They are not on the firms webpage, nor are they on other firms websites.

What happened? HOW TO FIND OUT?

It's probably just natural attrition. Same thing happened at my firm and I was kinda freaked out for a bit, but it's just the nature of the business. It would actually probably be worse all the way around if there was no movement.

If you know their names, you could creep them on Google or LinkedIn. Unless the firm/office is small, attrition is usually the norm though, breh.

Another anon. One of the mid-level associates I met during my callback last fall for the internship this summer has since jumped ship to a boutique in the same town (this may not necessarily be a downgrade since the boutique, though less prestigious, specializes exclusively in what he did at the larger firm). I know this precisely because of the aforementioned Google creeping. I was wondering if I should invite him to lunch some time this summer and get the dirt on my SA firm. I want to know why he left and if there is anything/anyone I should look out for. Any reason why I shouldn't talk to him?

Try using LinkedIn. Some firms take forever to update their websites, so you won't be able to find their new firms right away.

Associate attrition at most big law firms in major markets is 10-15% per year. The associate track in most places is after all only 7-10 years. Also, people leave temporarily to do clerkships and what not. Depending on the firm, that can account for a lot of the people who leave after one year.
